For most uses, once a year is plenty. If you drive in excessivly duty/dirty environments, amybe a little more often.

From the K&N web site:

The general rule of thumb is that the filter needs to be cleaned when the dirt build up gets as thick as the wire mesh. The usual interval is 30,000 - 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions. We recommend that you check your filter about once a year in normal usage.

I do mine every other oil change or roughly 8,000 miles. I live in Florida, so the flyin' critters are more of a factor. Generally, if it looks dirty, it is, so it only helps to keep it clean.

That's a load of hype, and it really means when the filter is clean, the holes in the gauze are huge, then as the filter clogs, it can trap smaller stuff.
If you have a central air system in your house, go look at the filter. If it's all covered with dust, are you going to replace it? Yes. Why? Because although it filters real good now that all the holes and gaps in the filter medium are plugged with dust, it doesn't pass air very well at all.

But filter you are comparing to in a house is not an oil and gauze type filter, so that isn't really a good analogy. K&N's claim appears to be correct to me, I've been running their filters for a long time - back to when they were primarily seen on modified motorcycles. They really do filter better with some dirt; that is how they are designed.

You might want to check with Steve about the new Amsoil air filter, that replaced their oiled foam filter. The Ea is a blow-off dry filter.
