Subject: Troubleshooting Tranny Probs (42RE) IP: Logged
Message: Alright...so i'm wanting to set this truck up to run nitrous or if I can start working up the bucks, a remote turbo setup.
However, my transmission is ALL messed up and I want to make sure it's in good working condition before I even think about any major hp increasing mods.
Well, first off...i've always had some problems with it, but nothing serious. I tried changing my fluid/filter and ended up stripping one of the holes for the tranny pan, causing it to leak quite a bit. However, the tranny didn't operate any worse than before and I just never got around to fixing the leak until just recently. After semi-fixing the leak (couldn't heli-coil the hole due to the location...need some extensions, but I did manage to get the leak to nearly stop...if not stop completely), suddenly my tranny is acting up even worse.
Here's what it's doing...
When it hits WOT, it'll run up to redline, shift, run up to redline, rev and buck (sometimes twice), finally shift. And sometimes it'll operate just fine with no revving/bucking. Sometimes it won't downshift when I punch the gas...it'll bog and then FINALLY downshift, but it'll usually downshift to too low of a gear, rev way up, and shift into the gear it should have downshifted into in the first place. If I drive it with a super light foot, I normally don't have these problems...but you can't race with a light foot so yeah...you see where I'm going. I don't need any lectures on racing...this isn't a post on my behavior, it's a post on my transmission problems.
I've also noticed that when I'm on the highway with the cruise set around 65-70mph, it will often rev up about 300 rpm's and then the tach will return to where it originally was. I don't feel it go out of gear or any loss of speed...just a quick audible rev and the tach jumps.
I'm inclined to believe this is all related to a sensor/multiple sensors...and not a physical problem in the tranny. But I'm clueless as to what sensor it is, etc. I have SOME mechanical ability...so I'd rather save a couple hundred bucks if this is a simple job. If anyone knows for sure what the problem is, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I also have a Transgo shift kit I'd like to get installed...but I don't want it installed until I know my transmission is in good working order and isn't gonna take a sh*t once it's installed.

Message: The first thing I would mess with, is the kickdown cable. The bucking sounds like you are hitting that wimpy 5.2 stock rev limiter.
if it's not something that simple, then maybe something in the tranny is worn/sticking etc. Like the governor. That is basically the mechanical speed sensor in the tranny. When they stick, they do all sorts of bad things.
I'd adjust your downshift cable first. make sure it's not worn, sticking etc.
As for the remote turbo. I'm STILL not sold on those. They somehow work, but go against the normal ideas of a turbo system.

But same things apply.

Message: People say that the change in RPM at highway speed is due to a bad TPS. I replaced mine to no avail. Because I have a supercharger, I decided that I needed a stronger transmission and torque converter. When I got everything out, I found that the torque converter was shot. It had a couple loose fins, and made funky noises while spinning it by hand.
Anyways, like graphitedak said, make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly. Replace the TPS, its relatively cheap. If that does not fix your problems, you will probably need a new torque converter. While you have the transmission out, I know where you can get a 44re for a reasonable price ;).

Message: Thanks guys...the tv cable was the first thing I was gonna check. Just gotta get a buddy to help me out since I can't be in two places at once to check it. Didn't think about the TPS sensor for the highway problems but that does make sense. I've got a spare modified one in the shed, I'll swap it out when I get a chance (and retweak the voltage) and see how that works. A while back I had a gut-feeling it was my torque converter, but with only 73,xxx miles, how likely is that?
...and you all know if that tranny has to come out, I'm not putting the stock one back in there after wasting all that money having someone pull it. Might as well go all out and get a much stronger tranny. lol

Message: @Cummins
I agree, the A500's held up quite well compared with 518's and even the 618's auto tyrannies. I had a Dodge truck with the older 518 and I can say it was crap. It’s just not built right. Matter of fact I even wanted too trade in my 46RH for a 44RH auto.

Message: OK Im pretty sure its a300 not 500 but I
could be wrong.. Anyways all of them
transmissions are the same the 42re
being the smallest one 44 and 46 rh or re
are just heavy duty versions the re being
electronic. And idk what you're smoking
Tyler but I know for a fact that the axod
and related ford transmissions are the
worst ever made! With the Chevy th700r4
a close second. OK so now that I got that
out of the way I have a 95 jeep grand
Cherokee Laredo with the 42 re
transmission in it. My aunt had it
previously it leaked and she put ford trans
fluid in it about a thousand miles later it
stopped moving at all. Sooo knowing
thatreplaced the fluid and filter and the
governor pressure sensor/shift solenoid.
it drove fine for about 8k miles only
problem was the rapid shifting between
1st and second gear with light
acceleration. And sometimes it would
surge like the torque converter was
locking up when I put it in reverse. That
was a rare occurrence tho. So the
weather got extremely cold recently and
this transmission just started acting up
like some days it would run like new other
days I had to manually shift out of 1st
gear once the rpms were above 2k to
keep it from shifting between 1 and 2 a
thousand times. Until one day I started it
up in the morning put it in gear and it
started making this whirring noise like
metal on metal maybe the torque
converter?? I hope... That same day I
drove it to work up and down hills
everyday and on the way home I get to
the light at the bottom of the hill light
turned green and it didn't move. After a
few minutes it finally started moving after
applying a bit of gas and I drove it home.
It still drives but I'm afraid to take it to
work now.

Message: Also the temperature sending unit is
broken its been broken the whole time
since I got it. I tried to replace it once but
the fragile lil thing broke. And I had a hard
time finding the sensor/solenoid
becausemine ddoesn't have the upgrade
its a late model 94.. When I found it I
talked to the transmission shop about it
and they said it sounded like the torque
converter was coming apart. Now there
are tiny metal flakes on the dipstick which
I'm hoping are coming from the converter
and idk if I should just replace it or
replace the whole transmission?
The first time I pulled the pan off I didn't
find anything in the pan and a lil bit of
clutch dust in the filter. It has just over
200k miles on it and idk if its the original
transmission. If I replace the converter
I'm going to install the upgrade pressure
sensors and shift solenoids at the same
time but need to make sure the
transmission is still good. I've yet to pull
the pan off will check back and update in
a couple days.
If the transmission is bad I want to put a
standard transmission in it which I'm told
was not available for 95 but was available
for 93-94 models. And being that my jeep
is a late model 94 I don't see why that
would be a problem but any help or
suggestions would be appreciated.

Sometimes it won't go into gear 2 to 3 or 3to 4
And some times its smooth as silk any ideas. I beleave it could be the speed sensor which sents
the signal to the pcm which in turn sents it to the trany control
