Subject: Lots of problems... IP: Logged
Message: Like i said, i have lots of problems and i need some help. So here goes, from crucial to annoying....
1. Exhaust Manifold studs snapped off on drivers side, creating an exhaust leak and now allowing air in to pipes, increasing the fuel mixture so much to the point that it will stall upon declerating with clutch in on cold engine. Shop says they don;t want to drill out the studs since they could possible damage the water jackets. Any ideas???
2. Brake light/ABS sensor is flashing, no noticeable problems while driving, doesn;t show up on computer when i read the error codes.
3. Speed sensor is malfunctioning, hence no speedo or odometer. Where is this located? How do i fix it?
4. Clutch seems to only slip during the last 80-95% of pedal travel, so when i feel the truck is firmly in gear and back off the pedal, its almost completely out already. Brought this in and had clutch replaced but the slip point is the same, now with just a new clutch. Again, any ideas????
oh, by the way, 2000 v-6 dakota, 125,000mi, thanks for any resonses in advance...

Message: #2 and #3 may be the same issue, the rear speed sensor, located on the rear differential.

Message: Lots have studs break off of exhaust manafold. And they all have to be drilled out. Best is to be sure the manifold is lined up with the busted stud. Best to drill with an angle drill due to room issues. Use a left handed set of bits to drill with. use the one that just fits the hole in manifold and get an indent started. this way a SMALL left handed bit will center well. Work your way up to one that takes most of the stud out. Most likely at some point the reverce drill bit will screw the busted stud out. If not, use a SQUARE easy out to remove. DO NOT install easy out any tighter then needed . stud metal will be thin and will expand easy making it lock itself in. remove a good stud removed to determine how deep you can safely drill. Replace studs/bolts with grade #8 and DO REPLACE all including the good ones or you will be doing it again and again.
On the cluch problem, my guess is a weak presure plate. No other guesses on this one.
At times all codes do not show unless a factory OBD2 or after market one that does cover all codes is used.
JEFF is correct about the speed senser.
Codes that show up are not always correct. The computer can misread. These are my opinions. others may see it differant. Good luck
So many problems .... So little time

Message: #4) i hope you replaced the pressure plate and throwout bearing and also resurface the flywheel. if not, that's probably the cause of your slipping.
#'s 2&3) i'd follow Jeff's advice.
on an '00 you can read codes from the odometer by turning the key on/off/on/off/on and the odo will display as Pxxx and when it's finished Pdone.

Message: Its been a while since I've done any clutch work, but my guess is either the Master or the Slave clutch cylinder may be bad. One going bad can cause the symptoms described.
It could also be a much larger problem like daddio mentioned.

Message: Wow guys, thanks so much...
I guess im going to have to dedicate this weekend to do some serious drilling, i just noticed a head bolt snapped on the other side as well so i guess they are all coming out.
I will also replace the rear speed sensor this weekend, see if that takes care of everything...
I'm taking it back to the guy who did my clutch and make sure he takes care of some of those issues you brought up...I want to bring the fun back into driving my truck!
Thanks again...you guys are awesome

Message: Sorry to hear about all of that. My 2000 Club Cab 4.7 has 90,000 on it and I've only ever replaced the engine belt, shocks and one u-joint.

Message: That sucks for those problems; especially those studs breaking. Does your truck idle real rough or something? Do you do any kind of high speed off road driving in it?
I'll third or fourth the speed sensor going out. lol My 1999 had the exact same problem.
As it turns out, a regular scan tool will not read the ABS codes; which is what you have when the ABS light illuminates. A friend at the dealer read it for me with this giant dealer only scanner.
I had him replace the speed sensor; after he told me you have to be extra gentle rotating it back and forth as you pull the speed sensor out of the axle housing. He said that he has broken one off in the axle before and it wasn't very fun. He only took about fifteen minutes to replace the sensor on my truck though. It looked really easy, I regret not doing it myself.
