Subject: dies out when put in park. IP: Logged
Message: Hi all,
I have had a problem with my 99 V6 3.9L, My idle surges between 6-800 rpms and whenever i put my truck into park it lowers to around 4-500 rpms and occasionally dies out. Does anyone know what this may be? I have tried searching through past entries but am unable to find anything similar.
Thanks to all.

Message: what is the condition of your battery? if it's old and weak that could be the problem. have it load tested.
could also be the IAC on the back of the throttle body. you can take it out(2 torx screws) and clean the plunger and the port on the TB with some carb cleaner. don't turn or push the plunger or you'll ruin the IAC. and don't lose the o-ring.

Message: Good advice from daddio there - but its strange that the rpms would be lower in park than in gear. Are you sure it isn't the other way around ? We'd expect to see lower rpms in gear, with the extra drag of the transmission needing a boost from the IAC. Might also be related to TPS ?

Message: Kowalski, i think what's happening is when it's shifted to park the pcm sees that and cuts the idle back, maybe a little too much and it dies.
just like when there is a demand for a/c the pcm kicks the idle up a little and when the compressor cuts off the pcm cuts the idle back.

Message: Maybe - I was thinking that baseline idle was set at the factory with the throttle blade stop screw, with the IAC only opening it up more as needed when put in gear or AC used. I'd imagine it may adjust for temperature too. Thanks for the insight.
Another explanation might be that the baseline isn't enough anymore if the TB is dirty; but when IAC is called to open for the other events it gets enough air then. Might be dirty TB ?

Message: Thanks a ton guys. The battery is pretty new (3 months), Daddio hit it on the dot as to what is happening. I was thinking possibly iac but wasnt sure. Thats what i am going to do though clean that puppy out along with the throttle body and we shall see what happens.
Thanks a lot
