Subject: Power Steering leaking IP: Logged
Message: After 112k miles, my power steering pump has decided to start leaking but I am not sure where as its so hard to see down in that area.
Has anyone had problems with their rubber lines cracking and leaking or is it more likely the pump itself? I have tried looking down in that area from several different directions but just cannot get a good look at that area. Would hate to pull the pump and it be just a hose. Was hoping others here might have been through it already and might be able to offer their solutoin before I start pulling.
Much help appreciated.
112k+ miles on my 4.7L and it still lays 30' of rubber from a stop (yea I got a SC tuner too) and no I wasn't power braking it. The ricer last night was though and he got schooled for it. Now I'm gonna have a big head all day for it too.

Message: Might want to check the lines, mine (2000 4.7 80k) are rubbing each other. Going to have to replace them someday. They rub in the middle, so it's probably not what yours is doing. But if you don't separate them and look, you wouldn't suspect they're rubbing a hole in themselves.

Message: I had a small leak. Could not tell from where.
It got on the pulleys or belt and sprayed all over.
My philosophy is to disassemble and clean. Then if the problem is still there, I know I have a real problem.
In this case, I used Seafoam's Transtune and flushed it all out. Then I switched to Amsoil Universal ATF.
That stopped the leak!
That was many thousands of miles ago.

Message: i remember a post a while back where someone mentioned the pressure switch on one of the p/s lines leaking. and in that case the fluid was traveling down inside the wiring harness to the o2 sensor some kind of way.

Message: Well, it ended up being the high-pressure hose had a small hole in it that was not noticable until it was squirting fluid all over the darn place like a geyser.
Replacement hose cost me just over $50 at Discount Auto Parts (aka Advance Auto Parts). Mine had the pressure switch which was easy to change over to the new hose. Hose itself was simple to replace too, loosening the old hose was harder than removing it and installing the new one. Believe I used a 5/8" inch wrench for pump end and a 3/4"(?) wrench for the opposite end.
I pulled my battery for the extra room to see down from top at angle, loosened hose end at pump from top by reaching down in front of motor (fan clutch was removed) and used wrench with left hand and grabbed with right down thru battery area for leverage. Removed other end of hose from under truck. Lowered & replaced hose from underside.
I hope this helps anyone else that needs to replce a P/S pump hose. Whole job including time it took for old fluid to drain was only like 15 minutes (at least half that was for the fluid drain alone).

Message: Bumping this just for people that are doing searches and looking for info.
I wouldn't buy the pressure hose from Autozone. I just did and the hollow bolt that screws in on the bottom doesn't give enough area for you to get a good bite with a wrench. I had to take the boot off the tie rod just to give me a little more room and still wasn't enough. Turned a 15 minute job into a rather annoying one that about an hour. I'd probably look to get it from O'reilly's or some other part store...maybe even from dodge :0
