Message: I suppose you're right. But it really sucks to buy a manual just to find out how much oil something holds. It should be in the owners manual, instead of "See your dealer". My only technical question was a torque value for the pinoin nut.
I really do appreciate all the help. If you guys need help fixing an old two cylinder JD let me know!

Message: Owner's manuals were designed to take care of 99% of the owners. The remaining 1% are stuck with buying factory or aftermarket repair manuals.

Message: I would highly suggest getting a Haynes manual...not only does it answer questions like those, but it'll save your ass when something small goes out and you don't wanna give your first born child to the dealer in order to diagnose and fix it. It's only around $10-15 for one...will pay for itself in no time.

Message: Owner's manuals were designed to make sure you have to go to the dealership and pay $800 to have something stupid like a fuel pump replaced (or other minor repairs).
When I was a kid I paid $500 to the dealership to fix a starter wire that was melted and grounding. They put some heat tape over it, gave me a $500 bill and told me they had to replace the harness.
Lesson learned. Buy a Haynes, they are almost worth their weight in gold.

Message: I've been disapointed in the Haynes manuals in the past. It always seems that when I look at it to try to figure out why this "stupid part" I've got all the bolts I can see out of won't budge they give me some kinda crap like "remove stupid part" with no pictures, no instructions, no bolt count, nothing!

Message: I suppose there will even be someone complaining because a book didn't tell them which way to turn the bolts. Unfortunately one book can't please everyone. Haynes may not be the best book out there but it is better than asking basic questions that could be answered by just about any repair manual. That was the whole point.
