Subject: Dodge's bad idea; two peice lug nuts IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone tell me why Chrysler decided to make steel lug nuts with a outter chrome shell?????
Every time I have to remove a tire I find that a cap disappears somewhere. I'm sick of replacing them one at a time from the dealer for 5 bucks a pop (must be where dodge makes its money). Anybody got any recommendations on new lug nuts, that utilize the same size lug wrench?
'01, 4x4, Ext Cab, 4.7, alloy wheels
Thanks

Message: It is done for appearance and economy; and not limited to Chrysler by any means. You should be happier with a solid lugnut, but I can't help wondering how you are treating the stock ones ? I rotate tires twice a year, and my '00 stock nuts are all still intact.

Message: And to think for several years I was accusing the tire guys of losing my chrome lugnuts and sticking plain old steel ones on in place of them. Finally 1 tech showed me the chrome cap that had just popped off the steel lug as he was putting them on with me standing right there with him.

Message: Yes, that's been a common practice for many years. But, I'm with Kawalski. I rotate tires every 5K for the last 80K miles. Although the impact wrench has dented them up a tad over the years, the covers are still intact.

Message: I really dont do anything out of the ordinary... The only thing that I can think of is that the salt got in there (I live in Buffalo NY) and helped to break the bond between the two over the years...
I used to work at a wholesale club putting on tires. The caps used to pop off all the time, the worst is when moisture would get in there and they would corrode and swell. Early dodge caravans (we called them dump wagons) were notorious for taking several hours to change 4 tires.

Message: Those of us with plows generally are plowing driveways and parking lots - not roads. I go through more salt than most, having to be out during storms; and imagine you're j/k too. Parallel parking isn't really all that bad either though - you need a bit more room, but learn to angle the plow to get into the space - and once your in, if the car in front moves, most don't want to park too close to a plow !

Message: Myself, I was preparing to wash my truck and noticed there was 3 missing crome lug nut caps on the right rear wheel. Walking around the truck, there was a total of 6 missing. Up to this point, I was unaware my lug nuts had these caps. To my surprise. these caps were $4.95 each at dealer. No way. I just went to Lisac's Tire store and got 24 solid crome lug nuts (INSTALLED) for less then $20.00 bucks.

Message: LOL! How did CHRYSER/DODGE get blames for that one???
Those plated lug nuts have been around for years.
I think finding a socket that fits nicely is the key. In fact. I have a 2003 Dakota and a 2004 Grand Caravan. Both with chrome wheels and the exposed lugs.
Maybe the reason mine are ok still is because the POS tire iron/lug wrench has NEVER found it's way on our wheels (no flats away from home) I've ALWAYS used the impact and socket on them. Impact to get snug, torque wrench to torque to specs.

yep, but mine had the 302 4spd...did fantastic burnouts with traction bars.
Come to think of it, my 73 Charger had those dang capped lug nuts, too.

Message: I agree with Jol. Had a 94 Caravan with those awful stinkers. I ended up having to chisel the nuts off to get the wheels off. Needless to say I bought solid nuts for it.
There is absolutely no reason for those cheapies to be made. They should be banned. Imagine a senior citizen or my wife stuck somewhere with that problem! In fact I imagined myself stuck with that Caravan if it had a flat on a trip. Just think of sitting on the shoulder of the hiway at midnight in the rain trying to chisel the nuts off! Wow!
The price of vehicles these days, a person should expect better quality - from all makes.

Message: Many mistakenly belive they are solid, until they start comming apart. These are very common on most makes, and have been for quite some time. When you see one come apart, you'll understand.

Message: choochoo makes a good point. If you are on the road and one the caps has previously fallen off you are not going to get the lugnut off with the wrench supplied. They should provide both sizes.
However, there should never be a need to "chisel" them off. Without the caps a standard socket will fit the remaining part.
