Sounds exactly like a problem I had with my jeep - a ring type (spider?) gear in the rear end broke in half. Made e a clacking sound. As it got worse, every once in awhile the broken gear would jam and lock the rear end and I would come to a screeching stop. I had to have it dragged onto a transporter because the wheels wouldn't turn. Dealer wanted $1500 but I took it to an independant drive train shop and got new gears for $750. Also had a gear break in my Dak and that one made a sound like a brake drum with worn out shoes rubbing - metal on metal. couldn't hear it in neutral for some reason - only when in gear.

Maybe a bad motor mount allowing something to move and contact a bit ? Can you look to see what is going on with someone ( you trust ;0 ) holding the brake while in gear ? If it makes noise with the brake on like that you can listen to different areas through a pipe to isolate where its coming from too - might also be internal engine wear you can hear more under load.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
