Message: I don't think there's is ANYTHING electronic in that tranny (assuming 42RE or whatever the 5.2's have). Just one selenoid to allow Converter lock up, one selenoid to allow OverDrive.
The very first thing I would check is your kick down cable at your throttle body. Make sure it isn't sticking or adjusted too far. That would keep it from upshifting for sure.
If you keep the throttle mashed and run it close to redline, does it still hang in 2nd gear?

Message: yeah it still stays in second. i havent redlined it but i will get it up there in the rpms and just let off and it wont shift. are you saying you think the torque converter isnt being able to unlock? cuz that sounds like a resonable explanation. next time it happens ill try clicking the o/d off and see if it helps.
o it is a 2x4

Message: the 44re which is what i think that tranny is, is computer controlled for everything i think. the 46RH(my tranny) is the one that had a solenoid for overdrive and a solenoid for lockup. i dont know what causes this in DC tranny's but, in my blazer tranny, it did the same thing. It liked to hang in a gear, usually 2nd gear, because the lockup got smoked and when that happened, it shot crap through the tranny and clogged the governor.

The tranny jayb may be thinking of that is computer controlled for everything is the 45RFE (and newer version 545RFE) - neither of which were used behind a 5.2.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Yup. The lockup wouldn't be stuck and would have no effect on shifting.
WHEN a lockup sticks, it will stall the engine when you come to a stop, just like a manual tranny when you don't push in the clutch.
The most simplest thing is the kickdown cable. I think many of you call it a TV cable or something. It's the one attached to the throttle at the throttle body. You can adjust how far it pulls, etc. IF that cable were to stick in Wide Open Throttle, it wont upshuft unless you come close to redline. Approx 5,000 revs.
Sounds like you have already done that if you have stayed into the throttle.
Two other probable causes.
One of the shuttle valves in the transmission valve body is STUCK, or the Governor in the transmission is STUCK.
The govenor is a mechanism that spins consistant with the output shaft to change pressure to a valve body port. This is basically so it knows how fast you are going.
It has counterweights and springs. On a Dodge, they are a real biatch to access. Pretty much disassembling the transmission.
On a Chevy (YUKK) they are accessable by popping a simple cover off of the side (non electronic tranny's) and pulling it right out. But again, Chevy governors would like to chew up their nylon gear, so it was a good thing it came out so easily!
Good luck. If it were me...
-Check downshift cable. Make sure it moves easily.
-Drop transmission pan. Change filter. Examine fluid and particles in the pan.
-See how sloppy the bands are while the pan is off. Not sure about Dodge, but the one band may be 2nd gear. It is on most transmissions.

Message: In my blazer, the lockup wasnt stuck, just f'd up. when it engaged, the whole truck would shimmy at highway speeds kinda like a tire was off balance. i unplugged it and that problem went away but the governor was still clogged so it didnt want to shift. alot of times i was starting off in 2nd gear.
About the 44RE or any tranny RE. I thought the "RH" term meant Hydraulically controlled, Except the OD, which is electronically controlled. "RE" meant Electronically controlled for everything including the OD. From what i understand, when the 45RFE came out, it is also electronically controlled, but more gears and better electronics or some sh!t. Ive read up on these trannys, but if im wrong, im always willing to learn.

Message: Interesting. But I've seen Rammer's 46RE or whatever in his 2000 Ram and it is mechanical valve body controlled similar to the old 904/727's except it has the lockup and OD added.

Message: I believe that the newer 318's had the 44re tranny mated to them. Also the older modles (like mine) had the horrible 46RH tranny that like to hang on to a gear before shifting.
