Subject: tranny trouble?

Message:
I have a 99 3.9 auto, when i am driving shifts just fine but about 45 or 50 mph when it shifts to i believe it would be 4th gear it seems to almost bog down. Not too bad but almost like its in too high of a gear ie (a manual trans when you shift to 4th or 5th doing about 25mph). If i push harder on the accelerator it seems to go ok then but it doesnt change a gear. Is this usual for this truck or is that gear shot? Please help!

Under "lite" acceleration, you will be in 4th (OD) at around 35 mph. 45 mph is about where the torque converter will lock up. Does this cause a problem? Automatics are usually set up for increase mileage and shift relatievly early with lite throttle pressure. I am pretty sure you have nothing wrong.

I just posted for someone else on how to have the lockup occur later under the same throttle pressure.

its not a problem just has that deep sound and bogged down feel to it. It still accelerates ok though. Thanks a ton!

Crow318, how do you get the torque converter to lock up later under the same throttle pressure?

You will need to adjust the TV cable. Keep in mind, if this cable is too loose, you will wear the tranmission with excessive slip, and if its too tight, there will be too much pressure and cause issues too.

That being said, there is a small "box" at the end of the TV cable near the throttle body. Take note of where the clip is. To increase shift firmness and line pressure (in turn increaseing lockup speed) move the clip to tighten the cable.
