Message: hey all...winter is coming up... and you know what thats means.. (just kidding that was a pretend amsoil ad)
but really... its getting cold and i was wondering if i should wait to relocate my IAT sensor and buy a 180 degree t-stat...will they still improve performance when its cold out? or should i save my money for spring?

Message: The theory on the IAT is that you want it to indicate colder so what could be better than exposing it to the cold winter air? When the temp drops into the sub-zero range let me know how well that 180 stat keeps you warm.
If cold air intakes were all that great, just think of the awsome hp you would be putting out during those sub-zero days.
All in all these trucks do perform better in winter than summer but at the expense of 3-4 mile per gallon.
For winter I do everything opposite of what most people try to do during the summer. I remove my fan, but get by with that only because I never encounter heavy traffic. It's something you can try but you might want to throw the fan in back just in case your particular cooling system can't handle it. The IAT goes back were it belongs and I duct warm air off the exhaust manifold into the intake. That reduces that 3-4 mpg lose to about 1-2 mpg.

Message: The IAT relocate and the 180 stat tells the comp your engine is running cooler and in doing so it delivers a little more fuel. Totaly backwards to what I want from my engine. Gas milage goes south enough in winter when engine is stock. Sure you might get a touch more power but nothing to write home about. I keep hearing the 180 stat gives longer engine life when in fact every test I've ever read indicates the hoter the engine runs, the longer it lives. This was figured out years ago When they went from 4 lb radiater caps, 180 stat and side draft engine breathers that dictated engine rebuild at anytime past 50,000 miles to the high presure cap and 190 stat to raise the boiling point plus the PCV valve and the side effects to this is a far better heater. I have yet to understand why so many are intent on reversing nicely improved design features. final word. When these changes came about in the 60's, with desent care an engine would live 200,000 plus miles easily.
So many problems .... So little time

Hey trucky,
I thought your comment ...

... was very funny!
CORRECT ... Now that Winter is upon us ...
Three Critical Concerns for Confident Cold Weather Travel
All vehicles need attention from time to time, but in the wintertime your Dakota needs extra care. For confident winter starts, it is important to keep a watch on three critical areas: the lubrication system, the cooling system and the battery.
ha ha ... I had to do it!
REMINDER: For severe cold, there is a significant performance difference between synthetic and conventional motor oil.
Please consider Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oil for your Dakota.

Message: Don't forget to change to winter air in the tires.
Winter air is colder, therefore more dense, so it takes up less space, so it requires more air for the same pressure.

Message:
You may be able to go 25k miles between air changes.
That is if your tires last 25k miles.
I know Dakota owners like to "burn rubber" !
FYI -- This is for non-severe driving.
If you off-road, 4x4, rock climb, etc., you
may need to change your air more frequently.
HA HA ... I had to add that. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha !!!
*** CHECK YOUR AIR PRESSURE ON A REGULAR BASIS.
