Related (i think) problems:

I have a '92 Dakota 3.9 V6 that will start fine when it's cold, but when it gets warmed up (say, 10 minutes of driving), it will try to die if I don't keep my foot on the gas (ie, stop and go traffic and it's idling, it will abruptly just want to die).

Also, when driving 50-70mph, it will randomly downshift from OD to 4th or 3rd, and will stay there and then randomly shift back to overdrive, or whatever gear it's supposed to be in.

If it dies on me, it usually will (reluctantly) start back up after cranking for a couple of seconds. At that point, I can smell gasoline.

I took it to a shop and they cleared a coolant error code, and it ran fine for a few days. Then it started doing this again.

After reading some posts, I guess it could be the 'famous splice' problem. I'm not an expert in electrical things but I can fix a wire problem I think. Maybe a coil problem?

Any help would be great!

they just cleared the code and didn't look for what caused it?

i think it may be the temp sensor.

Pretty much. They said it was running fine now and gave it back. I figured it was too good to be true. I'll change the temp sensor and see what happens.

there are 2 temp sensors. 1 for the gage and one feeds the signal to the pcm. change the 1 for the pcm.

Ok. Do you know where the one for the pcm is located? I've replaced some parts on the truck's engine, but I'm not sure where this sensor is.

The engine coolant temperature sensor, the one that provides an input to the PCM, is a 2-wire connector located to the left of the upper radiator hose on the engine block. (Left as viewed from the drivers seat).
The sensor that controls your temperature gauge is a single wire connector to the right of the upper radiator hose on the block.

Which code? If code 17, then the thermostat is probably stuck open. The downshifting sounds like a bad TPS. I had both problems at once, and replacing both cured these symptoms.
