Subject: 99 5.2L water pump replacement

Looks like the water pump on my 92 SLT 5.2L has gone south, squeeking and leaking.
Anyone have any tips as to how to get to it, get it off, etc? I looks like I have to pull the fan and fan shroud off to get at it. Most difficult seems to be how to hold the pulley in place while turning that large nut on the pump shaft. This pulley is pressed on so it does'nt have the bolts shown in the chilton manual.
I'd appreciate any tips.
Thanks.

not sure on the 5.2 but most press ons require a tool. Usually if you have an autozone around you they have a free tool rental. You just leave a deposit and get it back after you return the tool. I bet that will solve your problem. After that the only problem is finding the space to do the job.

grab the pulley on the edge with vise grip pliers. not too tight to damage it just enough to hold it from spinning. put a wrench on that nut and whack it with a hammer. it should loosen right up.

don't forget to change that little bypass hose when you take the pump off.

On my 99 5.2 there are holes in the pully behind the clutch fan (where the belt turns the fan). Find a long nail or screw and stick it in the hole. Turn the fan counter clockwise (looking at the motor) until the fan stops.

Put your wrench on the fan clutch bolt and pull (again counter clock wise).

Should come right off. An extra set of hands is usually needed for this first step.

Thanks for all the advice.
FYI, here's what I found in hopes it may help someone else.
The pulley was pressed on and had the 4 holes. I got the free loaner tool from O'reilly when I bought the water pumpe. Unfortunately, the wrench didn't fit the Fan nut, so I had to go buy a 12" crescent adjustable wrench (no prob buying new tools :) )
I used a Craftsman strap wrench to hold the pully while turning the nut.
I didn't change the bypass hose. It looked pretty new, and I couldn't see how to change it without pulling off the AC compressor, which looks like a lot of work.
Anyway, put the new one on, waited for the RTV to cure for a few hours, and it seems leak free.
