i have been in so many arguments over this and i hope someone can clear this up for me. i have a 2000 Dakota and i alway tell people i have a 2nd generation dak but EVERY body tells me its a 3rd but cant explain the first 2. i always though that the 1st gen was from 87-86 2nd 97-04 and the 3rd 05- present.

By Chrysler's records, you have a 2nd generation. According to them, 1st gen. ran through 1996. On the street, most consider the changes in appearance from '91 up to be the 2nd generation, and this makes yours a 3rd gen.

I won't call you an idiot, but instead describe the Daks as they look.
The original Dak has a flat front/grille - I call it GenI.
My friend has one that definitely looks different, and it's a '94. The grille and hood edge are rounded outwards in the middle, and the overall style is slightly different - I call it GenII.
I have an 04 that looks like a baby Ram. Bulge type fender styling - I call that GenIII.
The 05 and up butt-uglies are Gen IV.

glad to see im not the only one that wants to puke every time they see a new dakota, thanx
i just always called dakota from 87-96 Gen 1 coz they are all teh same body style, look like the first gen ram in that they were nothing but a box.
i had a typo up there it should say 1st gen was from 87-96

I still think 3 generations. simply because the early 90's dakotas
with the different grilles also had the different options than the late
80's. Such as the 5.2. I read somewhere that the 96 dakota is
practically the same truck as the 97. Just different body and
interior styles. but you know what they say, don't believe
everything you hear, and only half of what you read. lol.

but what you all are callin a gen 1 and gen 2 use the same frame and pretty close to the same body with the exception of grill and hood.. not really a new design.. thats like callin the 06 ram a gen 7 ram

So there's this confusion about generations of Dakotas. The confusion is fairly widespread across the many Dakota forums.
When you refer to a Gen3, I might be thinkin Gen2, and so on.
And who said the '05 and up were butt-ugly?!
I agree. Somebody needs to hammer them smooth.

Not sure on the Gen's but the `05+ totally look the best of all of them. it a whole other beast that over looks the lower gen's.
I just love the front end, the white guage faces, the tail lights, the way 2x4 and 4x4 are the same height. The 2005+ kick ass and is the Best Dakota made to date.

gen1dak pretty well summed it up - the reason enthusiasts figure the extra generation is more than just the change of appearance though - we consider gen2 to have started when they stretched the nose to fit the v8.
