Subject: Rear differential growling at me IP: Logged
Message: 99 dakota 318 4x4 8.25" rear end without lsd
My rear differential has the same old grinding/growling sound that I've seen old posts discussing. Having the thing rebuilt by the local Dodge dealership hasn't helped; after about four months, the growling came back again. I've been switching out the fluid in the thing about every four months for the past two years, and I'm getting tired of it.
Would it help if I used 85w140 instead of 75w90?
I'd rather not swap the whole axle, because of the cost and because this is my daily driver: no need to hop it up for off-roading or racing.
How about if I replaced the gears with some aftermarket parts of superior quality, in the same gearing ratio? Which parts are recommended?

Message: If the growl was cased by bearings, They should hae changed them out fixing the problem. If it was caused by the gears, Then they needed to replace them also. Growling gears are scared and adjustment will not fix them. Go back to the shop. They should be liable for the proper repair assuming they are a reputable shop.
So many problems .... So little time
