Have had a weird, barely noticable churning when accelerating. Climbed under it tonight to check the diff fluid and it is very gritty. Way more than what you would think would be normal. Wonderfull! Any thoughts? 02 4.7 w/ 3.55 diff.

I had that once and it was the center section where the spider gears are. It cracked in half. Put a PowerTrax in it. Dan

Sounds like bad news. Lots of miles ? The carrier bearings can cause trouble too; could be any number of things. If LSD, could change fluid with fresh LSD additive and hope, but sounds like the start of something serious. Btw, 3.55 is your gearing - could be 8 1/4 or 9 1/4 diff - stronger 9 1/4 has 12 bolts on an octagonal cover.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

gritty as in small metal filings in fluid type of gritty? I have also had the gears crack in half in my Dak. Caused a metallic noise that sounded like brake linings worn down and metal against drum. Indeed I thought it was brakes at first. Time to have your rear end checked out and head for the gym if necessary.

Well that was fun! Since I was still under my extended warranty I took in to the local dealership. Turns out that the clutches had fallen apart and ground most of the diff to mush. They also found that my stearing rack was leaking. All total over $1,600 worth of work. Thank goodness for the extended warranty. The crazy thing is that as I was pulling out of the dealership lot the truck was bucking and the MIL came on. Cylinder 3 misfire code. Took it right back in. The next morning they called and said that they had moved the #3 plug to #1 and the code changed to cylinder 1 misfire. Need new plugs. When I went to pick it up they said they had to charge me for the diagnosis. BS! I'm holding the form in my hand that says "you are entitled to an estimate" and it's blank. Plus I didn't even get out of their lot. I doubt they could have done anything to cause it but I bring them a lot of fleet business and for them to be willing to lose my business over $72.45 is pretty rediculuos. One big fight with the manager later and I left without paying and the assurance that my future business would go elsewhere.
