Subject: Rattling and loud Clunk in 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: I have noticed a continuous scratchy rattling sound coming from my driveline (99 4x4 ex cab) for about two months or longer now. I recently got the truck in the air and noticed that when I spun the front tires the scratching sound seems to come from the front propeller shaft output on the transfer case.
I also noticed the transfer case seemed to have been leaking oil at one point or another. Sure enough, the case was low on oil so I drained/refilled the case.
I drove the truck and the noise is still present. I wouldn't be too worried but in 4HI the truck makes a loud clunking noise intermittently like the transfer case is temporarily disengaging (or it has a giant penguin rolling around inside of it).
Any thoughts?

Message: My thought would be that since the transfer case was run low on oil for a long time, that it's fried. probably scoring on the gears. disengaging is possible as some parts maybe discentigrated. any metal shavings come out in the bit of oil you drained?
