Message: can you tow an automatic 4x4 dakota? I want to pull it behind my motorhome. I would like to tow it with all the wheels on the ground.
Thanks,
Matt

Message: I have heard it is not a good idea unless you disconnect the driveshaft so the tranny is not turning. I have seen this in the owner manuals. Even if your car is in neutral it is not good to tow it unless for short distances and at low speeds at that ( again from a jeep owner's manual ). Yet I see cars being towed behnd motor homes all the time. I see front wheel drives being towed with their front on a dolly, which makes sense. Other jeeps and cars I see being towed with all 4 wheels on the ground. So what is correct?

Message: I have an 03 4x4 QC and do just that. Look through your owners manual on how to disengage the transfer case (mine takes about 15 seconds--most of which is me reading the steps--and can all be done from the cab).
You'll then need to install a towbar mount on the front of your Dak. I found a used Blue Ox one on Ebay. To install it, I had to remove the front bumper, trim away a little of the fascia with a Dremel tool.
Don't forget lights. If you're going to tow a lot, you may want to tap into your Dak's lights directly. I just use magnetic tow lights which I stick on the roof.
Then there's the issue of toad braking. Check your local laws to see if you're required to have auxiliary braking. Those braking systems can easily cost $1000.
Finally, there's the issue of motorhome GCVW, towbar, and trailer hitch capacities. Dakotas are heavy, as far as toads go.

Message: I tow a 2001 Quad cab with my motorhome (350 Cummins diesel). I use a Blue Ox tow bar and base plate. Just shift the transfer case into neutral, unlock the steering wheel, transmission in Park, and it's ready to tow. The steps for shifting the transfer case are covered in the owners manual.
I don't have an aux braking system, and have not had any problems.

That doesn't sound like a good idea to me...
Also...I've heard most say if you gotta tow with the wheels on the ground, to remove the drive shaft (both if you got a 4wd) to prevent excessive wear on the transmission.
Of course, just what I've heard since I've never towed my Dak before.

Message: GB2000 - disengaging the transfer case pretty much does the same thing as pulling the drive shafts...
