Subject: 4.7L Tranny Issues
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2001 QC Dakota 4.7L 4wd auto (45K) and every once and a while at very low speeds (5-10mph) the tranny jerks pretty hard. It mostly happens when I am not every applying any gas to it or just go to apply gas. I've never had any trouble lights come on though.

Is this just due to the tranny computer reconfiguring or is this something else? I read somewhere where a sensor can cause issues but not sure if this is such a case.

Thanks.

Maybe the TPS ? Mine's never done that; so its not some routine computer reconfiguring, if that's what you're thinking.

I bought a new 2004 4.7 5sp auto. I crove it home and an hour later as I left my place it clunked hard about a mile from where I live. It had 24 miles on the truck that night. Mine does that occassionally.
I have noticed if you drive harder the truck shifts differently, harder. You gotta baby it for a few days.

The PCM can adapt to different driving styles; but you guys shouldn't be getting a clunk like that.

aj - did you have the dealership check it out under warranty ? Maybe a problem with your TPS too ?

There is a flash available for a harsh upshift.

Maybe it's one of those "Bump Shift" problems Dodge lists as having an update (software) for.

There most likely is an update for a 2001

I've got the Superchips programmer, and 4.56 gears. Mine shifts very firm on hard throttle upshifts.
But still, barely on the throttle mine shifts smooth.

I bet programming will fix it.

Mine will do that if I am crawling around real slow, with little to no throttle, and the TCM decides it wants to shift into 2nd. Only happens at low speed and light throttle though.

I had the flash done for harsh up-shifts,cured the problem. Still get a bump at low speeds as described here,no biggie compared to before the flash.

I have a 2000 Dakota that does the same thing I get it going 5-10mph with no throttle and usually going downhill a bit. The transmission decides to change to second and it gives a little harsh shift.
