Subject: idling problem and fan possibly?
IP: Logged

Message:
when my 2000 dakota 5 spd sits overnight and i start it in the morning the whole truck will move side to side like a diesel truck does when you turn it off. then when i rev it a little it stops or it will stop on its own within 10 seconds.

what could be causing this?

also, sometimes when i park it for a short time and start it again the truck will be really loud until i shift into 3rd then it will stop.

2 annoying things that i need to fix. thanks for any help

What engine ? Second problem might be related to clutch fan.

my dak roars a little on some morning when it's cold out and I'm driving slowly out of my apt complex, or on other occasions when it's hot out and I have the AC on when I've just got in nd started out down the street. Usually stops when I take off a little down the street so it is just computer controlling engine. The shaking you have is probably related to computer control being off so the engine doesn't get correct timing or choke so it lopes a bit until you take off or get the rpms up. Loud is normal under certain conditions, but loping is not.

i have a 2000 3.9 standard dakota with 45,000 kms on it....

about the side to side movement. it will do this for about 5 seconds and then the engine will rev up to about 1100 on its own and then the shaking will stop and the rpms will go back to normal.

Might be bad TPS, but more likely a problem with the IAC (idle air control). Probably one of those rather than the computer itself, sounds like its shaking when the idle is too low. Another possibility could be the battery if its the original - one of the first signs of marginal voltage is the PCM forgetting the idle - but usually that makes it not idle at all with the 4.7, we have to rev it while it relearns. Might just be a little different with the 3.9.

kowalski's on the mark about the battery. i have the original battery in my '00 QC w/3.9 & 5spd. every now and then it will idle rough from a cold start for about 5-10 seconds then smoothes out as the voltage comes up.

if it's an old battery have it load tested.
