I can't help with the intake info but if you are running a high gear such as a 3.55 with that tire then a switch to something like 3.92 or 4.10 would make it feel as if it had a power boost.

I have an '89 4x4 with 31's BFG A/T tires. I'm getting 18.75 mpg (highways) and great power with my mods.

The bigger tires will increase "drag" on the vehicle, and yes, some modifications to the power would be recommended. I am using K&N filter, about 4" tall with about 13" of diameter across, which sits atop the throttle body injectors. I bought a Mr Gasket round aluminum air intake piece that fits perfectly on top, then the K&N is sitting on it exposed, and the Mr Gasket on the top of it, holding it in place. Simple. Just find a local auto parts place that stocks a round aluminum set up which will fit on the air intake, which allows an open air element for the air filter. Then any K&N filter should work, as long as the diameter measures the same.

Dont bother asking them if there are any specifically made for that year of Dakota. There arent any. You just have to find one that fits on there and run with it.

Sorry I dont have pics for this, but I may do that sometime soon.

Hi KJ and TigerDak, thank you for responding. About the gears, would running 410s or so on really pull down my gas milage? As it is, I burn more fuel than a F-16 Tomcat combat aircraft! Its terrible.
Anyways, about the intake system, TigerDak, if you can explain to me how you found the measure of you Throttle injectors. Did you simply measure the width of the stock airbox's bottom opening? And how are you getting 18 Miles per gallon. I must have some real problem with my truck. I am going to replace the oxy sensor soon. That might help some. Please respond if you have any comments. Thanks.

When you take off the stock air box, the throttle body injection system is then exposed. The big silver block thing that looks like a carbeurator? The round thing on top that is about 8" across (or something like that)? That is your fuel injection.

Whatever that diameter is, will be how big the hole is in your aluminum piece that goes across. This will allow the air filter to be held in place by the aluminum piece, and the the air hole is unobstructed. Then, on top, the aluminum piece is solid all the way across - no 8" hole in the center.

All of this means that your air filter is the only area letting in air into your fuel system.

Dang I wish I could put that into better words! I hope that all makes sense.

I'll answer how I'm getting 18 mpg later....going to bed now. ;)

Hey TigerDak, I really understand what you are saying. Thanks. I will definitly look into that new filter. But man, your filter is huge, 4inx 13in. Did you notice an increase in HP or fuel ecenomy? I am looking into this seriously. I feel it is something very worthwile. Please tell me how you are getting 18 MPG. I am shocked. I get like 12 or 13. Up to 15 before the 31's but now, I am sure its worse. Well thank you for your explaination. Talk to you later.

Hey Joe
I think I can help go to www.g-forced.com
I build custom ram air intakes for dakotas. I would have to look at a truck like yours to see what it will take but if your truck is like I think it is then it shouldent be a prob.
Every truck that our system is on, have reported a 2-3 mpg gain. hope we can help and the price is not bad.
