Subject: diff blow off hole??

Message:
had my differential serviced at jiffy lube (they do a full change, not just a pumpout/refill).
now its dripping on my parking space.

went back today... they said it was overfilled and it was just leaking out of the blow off hole at the top.

i've never heard of that, but then again i haven't heard of a lot of things.

so, fact or fiction?

This is above the fluid as you most likely are aware of. That leaves splash. I would guess the oil they used was thinner then what you was running and the gears are kicking it up more. When parking you drip what is in the hose. Of course it's dripping while driving also. If the oil is the correct stuff you want in there, get a longer hose and run it uphill at the differantial for say 5 or 6 inches and then down as normal. that way anything kicked up into it will run back down into the housing.

Coming out the vent port is way too much!
Put a catch pan under the diff, remove the fill plug, and let all the overfill drain out. Once it stops running out, your fluid is at the right level. And don't forget to put the plug back in.
Too much can be just as bad as not enough.

So how did they get "too much" in???? Was your truck facing down hill??? The plug is facing rear, once its to the bottom of the plug hole, its full. They were really good to fill it above the hole and then replug it without losing any.

More like "really stupid" to put that much extra effort into the servicing procedure. Taking a big chance going to one of the "inexpensive" places for ANY work. You typically get what you pay for. I am not saying ALL Jiffy, Speedy, Minute - type Lube joints are bad, but on the average, they have lower average "mechanics". Find a GOOD mechanic that has repeat customers who strongly recommend/ vouch for, and happily pay their fair prices knowing you will rarely have to go back for repeats on the same repairs. A good mechanic will also tell you when you should take it to the dealer because it is beyond an independent garage's capability.

Good luck.

The same thing happned to me ..... the lube place i took my truck to jacked up the rear of the truck to do the change ..... and they filled it with the rear end jacked WAY up in the air ... so when they filled it... all the fluid went to the front of the diff before it came out of the plug ...... i had almost twice the ammount it needed ...

Never seen a Jiffy that didn't do there work on a pit. This list includes all the others too. Only shops will use a Jack But they usually have a lift and some a pit. My shop had a pit from day one. Here the Jiffy lube and all other low quality lub joints Hire pre release Prisoners. They no nothing But The business gets paid by the state to hire these guys and gals at minimum wage. Very profitable doing business that way . The car washes also use this help as do a lot of resterants and others as well.
