Subject: What is "cupping" of a tire?
IP: Logged

Message:
This might be a stupid question, but I just read a review for a tire about it not cupping. What is this. Is it when a tire bulges out on the side?

By the way, can anyone tell me what tires don't bulge on the sidewalls b/c I'm looking for new tires and I don't want them doing that. I have Wrangler RT/S's and they bulge pretty badly. Thanks for any input...

From what I have heard , cupping is when shocks are bad , and tire get worn in cup shaped spots around
the entire tread.
Whatever tire you end up with -be sure to have
proper pressure in them..

Cupping is caused by problems with syspension or steering - don't know how a tire could be designed to be resistant to that ? You might change the bulge by going to a narrower tire - the bulge is more related to tire pressure, and size of rim relative to tire - than it is to brand of tire.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

If you are getting bulges on the side of the tire, it likely indicates a ply seperation. The bulges are caused by air leaking inbetween the plys.

If I'm reading your post correct, your looking for a tire that the walls stay flat rather then buldge a bit. If so, You may want to reconsider this. Tires with very hard sidwalls well give you what you want. Along with this fix comes a very rough ridding truck. You want soft side walls so they fleg nicely and give you that caddy type ride. I'm very pickey buying tires and always buy the tires with the softest side walls. As another bonus, Soft flexing side walls do not break as easy as hard ones on a bad chuck hole anD are more user friendly to alloy wheels which can break with a hard enough impact.

So many problems .... So little time

Thanks for the info. Ok, about the soft sidewalls. Now tell me if I'm wrong on this, the firmer the sidewall gives a rough ride but are stiffer. Won't these tires give better handling too?

All radial tires will have bulging sidewalls. They're designed that way. The sidewalls flex a bit and help absorb road irregularities.
If you want straight sidewalls, you have to go to a truck tire, and the ride will be much harsher because of the non-existent sidewall flex.

Cupping refers to tread wear. The tread "cups", and looks like it's been wore away in spots. Caused mostly by improper balance, wrong toe setting, and even incorrect camber can do it.

Josh... your correct about radial tires all flexing but If you ask the tire store to show you the diferance in them, There is a hugh differance in radials. Some have much stiffer sidewalls. As I said above. I pick the sofest sidwall tire I can get. Also to answer the traction question. The softer the tire the better the traction. Properly inflated they corner good and hang on to the road better also. My tire store want's me to run my tires at 45pds . I will not do this. It defeats the ability of th tire to improve ride and traction. I run old school pressure. 32lbs rear and 35 front. If your going to haul or pull a heavy load by all means for safety increase the pressure to 45 lbs. The tire stores argument is, the tires say right on them to run 45 lbs. Not true. It says MAX PRESSURE 45 LBS.

So many problems .... So little time

Hey Josh, if you go up to the View menu (in Firefox or Internet Explorer) go to "page style" and select no style you can see all the posts. Just make sure you change it back, or all the internet sites will look weird. :)

I Had to do it myself, couldn't read it either...

Thanks for the info, but I just discovered in Firefox if I turned off Javascript while I was on this board, the ads went away.
Tools-Options-Content and uncheck "enable Javascript".
I can read the whole thread, now. Sorry for the hijack.
