I'm trying to replace the bearings on my rear differential. It started squealling a couple days ago. I've got it all apart right now. The ccover is off, the pinion nut is off. The only thing holding the differential in are the axles, but I'm not exactly clear on how to remove the rear axles. Do they just pull out?

Please help. Its my only vehicle.

Ok, I have everything out. I think it was the front pinion bearing that was causing all the whining.

New Question - How do you get these bearings off? Do I need a special tool, or a press? I mean, I have pullers, but they don't seem to be doing the trick. I'm afraid I'll rip the outside casing off of the thing if I try and pull any harder on it. Also, I may not even have puller arms long enough to even grab onto the rear pinion bearing.

Sure it isn't the carrier bearings ? They have a reputation for being problematical.

Well, when I initially started hearing the noise I figured it had to be on the pinion side of things. The reason for that was the sound increased in frequency about 3x faster then the ground speed.

Then when I took it all apart, the only thing that really stood out was an extremely clean groove on the driveshaft flange. I mean it was extremely clean almost like metal to metal clean - but its where the front oil seal rides on it.

The only thing I could figure from all of that, was that it must be the front bearing. They're all these open conical type bearings so its really impossible to just rotate the thing while its out to tell if its bad. I might be wrong, but thats what I think it was.

Anyway, this job was way over my head. I was under some pressure to get it done quickly. If I had a press I may have actually just gotten whatever other tools and at least a copy of the section in the factory service manual and tried to go through with the job. I gave the entire rear to a local shop along with the new bearings to do all the bearing/race work, as well as the re-assembly. Live and learn I guess.
