Message: I have an '87 Jetta GL. Outside of the following no longer functioning items I love it: no A/C, no heater, falling headliner.
It has power windows and doors, sunroof, and gets 32MPG. 335K miles on the original engine (1.8) and tranny (5 speed).

Message: i wish i could treat this beater car as a beater car! it just way to damn cool and well design to trash.
that little 1.8 has awesome power and i have only taking it up to 4000rpm and it redlines at 6000rpm.
just need to get it register and aligned.
friends are shocked it was only $400
disk brakes front and rear, racing bucket seats, and a manual you can shift with out the clutch from 2nd-5th.
im missing a 2in diameter cap that is on the top of the trans towards the motor where the clutch is located. maybe you know where i can get this part?
haven't tried a jetta dealership.
do you know of any good jetta forums?

Message: Don't know of any good Jetta forums. I only have so much time available...
Yeah, for fun I like to shift 2-5 without the clutch. It's easy because the tranny is so loose. I surprised my good friend one day. I had been shifting w/o the clutch for most of the drive and after realizing it he was amazed that it could be done.
The plug. Sound like the timing hole cover. Mine is green.
Have fun with the car. Don't thrash it. Just put lots of (cheap) miles on it :-)

Message: how many qts of oil are you putting in it? i just did the first oil change and i put in 3 qts and it read full on the dip stick but the manual said 4.2qts. that means it will read way up on the dip stick. what weight oil are you run and what do you run in the winter?

Message: I run 20/50 oil in it. I think the owner's manual specifies 10/30 - not too sure. Four quarts is what I think it takes. I'm sorry for not knowing for sure: I get the oil changes done (with tire rotation) for $21. It's not worth it for me to get my hands dirty at that price.
The engine is so old (everything but the clutch and alternator are original) that if I run the lighter oil the oil warning light and buzzer will sometimes activate when the oil is good and hot. I changed the pressure sender and it made no difference. So if anything is wrong I think the pump doesn't pump enough oil when it gets thinned out from the heat. That's the reason for running 20/50.
Run it with the three quarts and check it after a few miles to see if it stays or drops. Add more if needed. :-)
