Subject: strange temps lately IP: Logged
Message: Lately I've been running around 200-205 prolly like 10 or 15
hotter than normal. I noticed a rattle in my exhaust durring idle
and heavy accel but its not constant only temp.
My a/c threw a bearing lately as well and I put on a smaller belt.
It seems like thats when it started could that be it or am I just
really peranoid because all of the stuff I have had go wrong w/
my truck in last 2 months.
do you guys think it could be a clogged cat or becasue of the
belt.

Message: Could be related to the belt, or the tensioner; or maybe just the cooling system getting older - maybe time to flush ?

Message: if the belt I used to bypass the a/c compressor is a little tight
could that effect it?
I definately didnt begin until this, I flushed the cooling system
out last summer.
Guess I better just get that bearing ordered and fix the a/c
compressor see if that works

Message: reguardless of cooling you most likely have a cat problem. get under there and hit it with a rubber hammer, maybe your fist. if it rattles as you strike it you need a new one.
Ss many problems .... So little time

Message: Here's a good way to test a cat - You should have around 17"-22" vacuum at idle; should be 3"-5" higher at 2500-3000 rpm. If same or lower, cat likely clogged. Good suggestion, but not all clogged cats will rattle.

Message: While I cant speak for the increase in engine temp, I can tell you I had a cat that rattled as you describe. The inards just fell apart. I fixed it the next day and didnt pay much attention to engine temp rise or loss in performance before the fix. Let us know if you find out the cause.

Message: temp before and after cat should be ~ 100 deg difference. You can always take it to a shop for a FREE inspection.
It could be clogged, i had a cat installed once on my old dakota and it was clogged, loud hissing sound similar to a vacuum leak.
don't forget the warranty on the cat if it does turn out to be bad.
now, if the cat is bad, could be time for a tuneup and/or oxygen sensor change. cat's dont just fail, no moving parts to fail.
