Subject: Burning smell while in 4WD IP: Logged
Message: Ok, haven't used 4WD in a while (6 months maybe). Engaged it to 4Hi while pulling stumps and it started smell real strong like it was burning. Needless to say I switched back to 2WD and it stopped. Any clues or should I just replace the fluid in the transfer case?

Message: Check the fluid level - often the seals leak and the front transfer case is low. There is a plug to remove to check it.
Believe it or not, the 4WD is just a chain drive like a bicycle inside that case. If there isn't enough tranny fluid in it, it can fry.
