Message: I am not a mechanic but not an idiot either. With that being said....I took my 00 quad to a local shop for a tranny fluid and filter change. I paid and drove my dak off the lot only to hit second gear and have the tranny slip. I immediately turned around and barely made it back on the lot. The service writer didn't seem to know to check the tranny warm nor could they read on the dipstick the need to check it in nuetral. Duh, I had to tell them that it makes a difference if you check it in park. They took it back to the shop stall and told me they may have to add a couple quarts. The service writer initially made a point to me that they will be using ATF+4 for my fluid change so it will cost a bit more. Fine. I snuck back to the shop area and saw the high school kid they had working on my truck, I also saw two empty containers of ATF+3 that he haad just put in my truck. I watched him check the fluid and had him do it several times as the engine was idleing. The level looked fine to me, I drove it around the lot and it was shifting fine. I complained to the service writer about getting charged extra for ATF+4 while seeing ATF+3 being put in. Long BS story from him about running out of +4 and that the two quarts added +3 was just as good. He gave me a coupon for a free oil change for the confusion. (what confusion, they got caught) I drove home and after about 10 miles, the tranny started shifting rough again and slipping. What did they do to it? It ran fine before they "worked" on it. Is there anything wrong with mixing ATF+3 and ATF+4 like they did? Would the tranny slip if they left out the little filter gasket or forgot to tighten the filter? Is there a vacumm line they could have disconnected? When I was a kid I changed my own tranny fluid in my Mustang so I know it is not that tough of a job. I need some ideas for what they could have done to my tranny before I go in there to complain. I certainly don't want them working on it but what other option do I have to make the make my truck right again? I have never had any trouble with my truck before they screwed with it. Any suggestions? thanks BTW...if you were wondering...no, I will not be using the free oil change coupon there

ONLY ATF+4 ... (or Amsoil)
Since 1999, due to the special requirements of their automatic transmissions, Chrysler has recommended a unique ATF+4 formulation. In addition, Chrysler has been recommending ATF+4 for all previous makes and models of Chrysler Corporation vehicles.
Chrysler went from ATF+ (MS 7176B) to ATF+4 in less than ten years. Essentially they were trying to make up for shifting problems in some of their transmissions by "tweaking" the frictional properties of their fluid rather than recalling the affected units. The ATF+4 fluid does seem to have solved the problems.

I'm not certain what "pooched" means, but Bob Lincoln is correct. Have them replace whatever they used with ATF+4 for FREE.
As I stated earlier, ... Since 1999, due to the special requirements of their automatic transmissions, Chrysler has recommended ATF+4 formulation ONLY ... or an ATF fluid that meets ATF+4 specifications. Not ATF+3.

Message: Pooched A.K.A. "The Rover Treatment"
The rover treatment suggests that a person or that persons property was lead around on a rope after being told one thing, but being given another.
For example...Being told you going to the park when in reality you are going to the vet (from a dogs perspective).

Message: They'll never siphon it all out - some will remain in the torque converter. These guys are right about the +4. It will need to be power flushed now if you want all the +3 out !

Message: As for as the +3, most, if not all of the 2000's came with +3. +4 wasn't out yet, they were planning on releasing it for the 2000's. But couldn't get it for some reason. Mine came with +3, still does too. (will go +4 next) As for not shifting right, I haven't a clue (except possibly using the wrong filter, 4WD vs 2WD uses different filters. May be something the "tech" didn't pick up on.)

Message: Sorry to hear that the shop monkeys "pooched" (LOL) your truck.
But, I don't think the ATF+3 is the culprit either. My 00 CC 2wd with 45RFE auto tranny came from the factory with ATF+3, and I serviced it at 50K with ATF+3,,, finding out a month later that ATF+4 was DC's new "recommended" fluid. Running ATF+3 in the truck for 80K didn't cause any harm to the transmission. Heck, even the manual for my old 2000 Dak states that ATF+3 is the recommended ATF.
That being said, ATF+4 is a better fluid and should be used instead of ATF+3.
Sounds like the fluid level isn't correct or the filters are causing problems as stated earlier,,, or they really messed something up. I don't see what they could have screwed up though, drop pan, change 2 filters, reseal pan and fill back up. But then again, my local Dodge dealership couldn't figger out why my 03's tranny was leaking. No,,, I should say they knew why it was leaking, but wouldn't fix it... reason #103 not to go to the dealer.
Since you paid for ATF+4 and they contaminated your tranny with ATF+3, make them flush it out with ATF+4 AND fix the shifting problem while they are at it.

Message: QQQ - I don't know where you got that info from, but my '00 4.7 came with +4; and my manual says to only use +4. Perhaps you are thinking of the other v8 auto tranny offered in '00 (5.9) ? +4 was definitely out !

Message: Somehow I'm getting the feeling you never even got the +3 to start with. Inotherwords you got 2 qts of +3 and who knows what else they put in. No doubt you was charged for +4 but they downgraded to there cheapest fluid to increase profit. I could be all wet here but the fact remains, you drove in working perfect and drove out screwed up. I really think I'm correct here knowing how those places operate. Even if they refuse to do a flush go to the dealer fast as you can and have them flush it proper. Your going to spend a few bucks but a new trany is a real chunk more.
So many problems .... So little time
