Subject: maintenence? IP: Logged
Message: Hi my truck is an 05 4.7L 4X4 and i have had it almost a year. i have never done any maintence though besides oil change and tires. i am thinking about cleaning the throttle body (i have a K&N intake so its easy to get to) and cleaning the engine compartment. does anyone have any tips or cleaners they use? also what else should i be cleaning or checking for to help performance?

Message: Cleaning the engine compartment is easy. But you do need to be carefull of the electronic components.
With the engine slightly warm, spray it good with Simple Green. Let it sit for just a few minutes. Then hose it down with water. A pressure sprayer with warm water works best. But use what you have.
As for the throttle body, it won't hurt anything to take it off and clean it. But you probably don't have enough miles on it to worry about. I cleaned mine after about 68K miles. It was a little dirty, but not much. Didn't notice any change in performance after I did it.

Message: If your like me and I'm anal about my maintence I use the owners manual to see when I should do what, but I always take off a 1/3 of the time or miles. EXAMPLE-- I do oil changes every 2000 miles--- as I said I'm anal. The way I see it is spending so much time under the hood I can always spot a problem before it gets out of hand. Don't let anyone tell you your crazy for keeping up with things, in the long run when you've got 300,000 miles on the truck you'll know it was worth it.

Message: Throw a can of sea foam in before you fill. Keep it around sixteen gallons of fuel. And don't fill up again untill you have run as much of the mix as possible. I run a can through every 10,000 or so, it's good stuff man. It'll keep your injector pintle from gumming, and clean the top of your intake valves and pistons to an extent.
P.S. If you have 50,000mi or over, double the amount (two cans per tank) for the first treatment.

Message: I agree with the seafoam. I use 1 can at every oil change. 1/3 in gas, 1/3 in oil, 1/3 in air intake.
how many miles are on the truck? check belts, hoses. what about tuneup?
