Subject: Brake problems IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
I have a 2k dakota 4x4 ext cab w/ 32" bfg all terrains. The brakes on the truck seem to have something wrong with them. I put new rotors/pads on a year ago and again they are warped so Im doing that again, but thats a whole different story.
My problem is that when I brake hard, the tires lock up very easily. It's almost unsafe, and I think I need to do something about it. Has anyone ever heard of this problem? I dont really know any other details to give, but let me know if anyone has any opinions, or things i can try.
thanks a lot

Message: I have a 98 Durango 4x4 that has the exact same problem. The front wheels lock up EXTREMELY easy and yet sometimes the pedal is mushy and goes clear to the floor before even starting to grab. Ive had the brakes checked, fluid flushed, new tires, old tires, new calipers, new rotors, new pads. Nothing seems to fix the problem...itll go away sometimes for awhile, be back later.
Wondering if a rear disc swap would help. That or maybe the EGR factory improved reworked calipers with stainless steel lines. Those look good.

Message: You could have a power brake booster problem or a perportioning valve that is bad. If the peddle is going to the floor sounds like a bad booster or master cyl. Goodluck

Message: The pedal has never really had any problems going to the floor. The brakes have always worked fine when slowing normally. It's just when you step hard that the problem happens. I thought maybe it was the difference in the tire size screwing it up.
Levey - Yours sounds pretty wicked too. Mine definitely isn't intermittent, its quite repeatable. I was thinking about taking it in to get the lines flushed sometime, but that doesn't really seem like the problem to me. Sure can't hurt though.
I picked up new rotors and pads at Autozone. I just have to take the old ones back in under warranty to get reimbursed. That's pretty cool, I guess I'll just have to replace pads/rotors every year under warranty to stop the warping.

Message: Could be caused by warped rotors which are usually caused by overtightened lug nuts. When putting lug nuts on use a torque wrench and set to specs. Tire shops are notorious for overtorqueing with air wrenches.
