How difficult is a clutch job for someone who regularly does work on his own Dakota but never a clutch. I don't have alot of special tools or a transmission jack. My Dakota is a '97 V6 standard cab.

if you're fairly mechanically inclined and have a friend and at least a Haynes repair manual you shouldn't have any trouble.

i haven't had to change it in my dak yet but i've done a few in my life time. resurface the flywheel and change the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing.

the clutch and/or the pressure plate should come with the pilot tool. the only specialty tool you would need would be a torque wrench.

What ever you do.....DO NOT buy remanufactured cluch parts. They blow on a regular basis. People have the habit of spinning the cluch trying to make it home and crystalize the metal.

So many problems .... So little time

I haven't done a clutch job myself but just had a repair shop install one. The previous one only had 10,000 miles on it but shuddered so bad when hot the truck was almost undriveable. That clutch was from Advance Auto Parts and made in China. The new clutch is an AC Delco and let's out very smooth, at least for now. Hopefully it won't go the way of my other clutch. But this just reiterates the previous post about installing the best clutch parts you can afford.
