Highly overated - don't trust it. Learn to look for potential problems yourself instead - like, is the brake pedal rubber and other parts more worn than the milage would suggest ? A good eye will spot signs of bodywork or flood damage too.

Kowalski's right. carfax is relying on other people to give them the information on the vehicles. i'd rather trust my own eyes.

Carfax only has info that the dealers update them with or if a crash was reported to insurance. they have no clue if someone floods their car and fixes it on their own ... or if they changed the engine

I find Carfax to be very useful when buying a used car.
Carfax will not tell you about mechanical problems with the car, but it can tell you if the car has been involved in a crash,rollback odometer(wich i found a few of these when checking cars),junk titles, and what states the car has been registered .
Personally, I will never buy a car based on a Carfax report, but it can make my decision alot easier.
For instance, two years ago I bought a 95 Ford E-350 with 190K miles.The van looked good but I was not sure if it was going to need alot of repairs because the amount of miles on the truck. I checked it on Carfax and I notice that the truck have had only one owner in the previos 10 years and it had been own by the Cocola Company. So I said, one owner, and perhaps well maintained because it comes from a big company.
Well, I went ahead and bought it. So far the 250K and still running strong.
