Message: Hello all, i have 2000 4.7 4x4 and have been towing a 3500lb travel trailer. The temp always seems to get in the red which mean salot of stopping. If I put a HD tranny cooler and a summer thermostat on would this solve the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas about the summer thermostat works as I live in a climate where it is colder more often than not. Would this be something that needs changing by the season?
Thanks for all the info!

Message: Myself, I run the same thermostate year round and in actuality this is normal and recomended by dodge. Do you have the towing package on your truck. This is important considering the load your pulling. If not or even if you do, I would install a radiator with more core, thicker, It's possible you have blockage in yours also. even at that I would shoot for the most cooling I could buy. Also, if you have the towing package you have a heavy duty trany cooler already. If not then you do need one. Good luck. one more thing. The cooler thermostate well open sooner and over heating will increase rather then decrease. Don't sound right but it is fact.

Message: I dont have heavy duty towing package, I will put an 18000 pound rated tranny cooler in. Does anyone know th cost of cleaning the rad?
this may be more of a problem than anything. My truck runs alot hotter than any other dak under the same workload

Message: Seems to be you need to check the radiator.
Also, you might have your radiator guy check the flow. Pumps can corrode away and do everything fine except move coolant.

Message: At the very least, you're going to need to add a
tranny cooler. My 02 4X4 4.7 has the factory tow
package and no over heating problem at all
pulling my 26' travel trailor.
The gearing on a tow package Dakota is also lower.
Yours is higher thus causing all to work harder
during heavy pulling.
I'm sure you know this but maybe not, NEVER use
OD (over drive) pulling the load you're stating.
Your raditor is the same as a tow package unit
unless for some reason you could buy a 2000 Dak
without air. Not a bad idea to pull it and have
it cleaned now that it's almost seven years old.

Message: About cleaning the radiator. Is there anything to be aware of if pulling the radiator to have it cleaned? I have no idea as to how it is done nowdays. They use to boil them, (have a shop near me that does it) but what do they do with newer radiators?
The ones with plastic side tanks, is the core removed and then reattached? Or can it be boiled as is? (2000 4.7 No problems)

Message: I at one time was very aquainted with a couple guys with a great radiator shop. The process was to remove the tanks and submurge the core in a tank containing water and asatone (CAMEL PISS) . The cores came out looking new inside and out. I.m unaware how these new junk radiators are done. Myself, I wouldn't mess with one. I'd go to a radiator shop and have one made with an extra row of passes. To me this is the perfect solution. Putting the trany cooler on is an absolute. Just keep in mind. This does nothing to cool the engine.

Message: Have you tried the radiator type flush aditive you can use with the radiator still in the truck, with a flush hose fitting you splice into the heater hose ? Are your cooling fins frre of bugs and dirt ? Fans working properly ? While an extra row helps cooling, it shouldn't be required - something else is wrong. My '00 4.7 4x4 still pulls a ton heavier than you without overheating, stock thermostat.

Message: Something I forgot. Have you changed or added to your cooling? 50/50 is recomended and 50/60 in real cold climates. I run 50/60 living in Montana where I have seen 55 below . You mentioned living in a colder climate. Maybe you added to much anti freeze thinking it's best in the cold area. To much anti freeze causes over heating and can jell in winter if cold enough. Just a thought.
