Subject: 1992 Dakota Stalls IP: Logged
Message: Hello. I have a 1992 5.2 Dakota which randomly stalls, as if someone turned the key off. There isn't much of a pattern as far as when it happens, but it will frequently stall after sitting for a couple days right after being started. After it stalls, the truck will turn over but not start immediately, until whatever the problem is goes away. It takes anywhere from 5 seconds to 5 minutes before it will start again. The O2 sensor, and the haul effects sensor have both been replaced. Please help!

Message: Check for this bad wire splice:
"Right below the underhood fusebox, about 8" down the harness is a splice (#115),
from that splice, it powers the PCM, Fuel Pump, and Coil.
All four wires are Red/white, one comes from the fusebox, two go right back up to the relays,
and the fourth goes the opposite direction to the PCM. You may have to unbolt the fusebox,
pull it out of the way, and cut open the tape on the harness to find the splice."
I did not have to remove the electrical distribution panel on my 93 but would have made it easier. Standing at drivers side fender looking down on top of Electrical panel you see the thick bundle of wires covered in “convoluted” black plastic running under it along the fender. Unwrap it carefully from the wires starting at the right of the box and go back a foot or more to either side. You need to separate the wires and will see 3 wires coming in from your left and the single pigtail coming from the firewall to your right. Mine had a red heat shrink tube over a foot long covering up everything so was hard to see. Cut the heat shrink tube off without cutting the insulation of the wires under it. You will see where all 4 come together. I melted the solder off and cut the wires back under the insulation to resolder the whole joint. The 3 wires coming from the distribution panel can get corroded as water drains from the box to the joint. My joint looked fine but the wires were green under the insulation, don’t assume the joint is good until you remove some insulation on the wires that feed the joint.
