 Subject: 97 A/C Replacement

My mechanic wants $1000 to replace an A/C evaporator ($300 for parts, $690 for labor). The local salvage yard sells the entire A/C (used of course) except the compressor for $69 with a six-month warranty. Am I insane to think I can gut and replace the A/C in my V-6 3.9L 97 Dakota?

How hard is this to do? I understand the dash has to be pulled out to get to the evaporator. Is this like auto-brain surgery or a tonsilectomy?

The dash coming out is fairly simple if you are ok with seeing your cab torm to hell and back. I highly suggest buying a haynes manual for this project. It is easily accomplished if you have some time and patience. Allow yourself at least an entire weekend and maybe have some friend of your that has nothing better to do or owes you big time.
I recently took my dash out to replace my blower motor fan so i know where you are coming from. I stood there by myself staring at the mess that was in my cab and thought oh crap what have I gotten into this time. I went to bed and got started early the next morning and had it done by mid-morning.
The point is that you can do it if you have the patience and a manual. Of course a really good set of tools is always a plus.

Hi Michael,
I just replaced the evaporator core on my 96 Dodge Dakota last week (8-04-06).It took me 12 hourse to do it, and I did it succesfully.
I bought the evaporator core on Ebay for $75 new(I would not suggest to buy a used one from junk yards because if it fails it will be too much work to replace it again)
I took pictures of the whole procedure. I can share the picture with you and how I did it if you are interested. I must admit I was afraid to do it but fear took over money,if you know what I mean.
If you work on your cars regularly, I am sure you will be able to the job yourself.
