Subject: 4 Wheel Drive IP: Logged
Message: I recently purchased a 2002 Dodge Dakota four door, four wheel drive with a 318 in it. After owning it for about two months I attempted to put the truck in four-wheel drive using the switch. It did engage and disengage but a day or so after the check engine light came on. Thinking it was an engine issue I made an appointment with a local garage. In the mean time I tried the 4-wheel drive again. Once again it engaged and disengaged and the check engine light went out. Last night I drove the truck (in 2 wheel drive) and this morning when I attempted to drive it the 4-wheel drive light was on while the switch was in two wheel drive and a dash light is on saying “Service 4-Wheel Drive.” Any ideas from you seasoned Dodge Dakota owners? Thanks Mnolin

Message: If the truck has been a pavement queen for 4 years and never run in 4wd, the transfer case could sieze up from lack of use and circulation of the fluid. Or something like that.

Message: There is a good chance the transfer case is either low on fluid or dry. How many miles does the truck have on it?

Message: The truck has about 48,000 miles on it. When I purchased the truck two months ago the original owner told me the fluids were all changed. How do I check the transfer case fluid? Thanks for the help.
