Message: Your goal with towing is to keep the trans from shifting in and out of OD. That creates a lot of heat, and wears out the internals.
As you tow, you'll learn what your truck can do and not do. If you're on flat ground, or a slight down slop, OD is fine. You'll be able to identify the hills that will cause the down shift, and do it manually before you get there. A shift under a light throttle and minimal load is much easier.
I tow a car/trailer to Pueblo on a regular basis. In my way down there, the OD is on most of the time. On the way back it's off most of the time. All depends on the grade.

Message: remember; going down hills, set your cruise control at the speed you want, overdrive off. and it'll hold better.
REMEMBER; you are stopping something, perfectly willing to spin you around and tip you over.
I've never had a heating problem with my automatic transmission. I suspect you will have similar luck if you use Amsoil ATF.
Drive like you are old. Enjoy the scenery. Have a good trip.
