Subject: Tires... IP: Logged
Message: I am new to this board, I was wondering if anyone here could help me out? I have a 2000, 3.9, 4x2, Quad Cab, I am upgrading my tires. Last week I saw a Dakota 4x4, with 31x10.5x15 tires on it. I really liked the look of them. I just want to be sure that my truck will have enough clearance for the same size tires, or if he only had the clearance because of his 4x4 suspension. I am purchasing the All-Terrain tires, but if there are any experiences with these as opposed to A/P or Mud and Snow tires, I would appreciate the heads up!! Thank you in advance...

Message: The 4x4 suspension makes that version sit higher.
In the rear, the 4x4 leaf springs are over the axle, and the 4x2 leafs are under. Because of this, the 4x4 is easier to lift, and the 4x2 is easier to lower.
The front is different as well. 4x4 uses torsion bar springs and 4x2 uses coil springs.
Two very different animals.

Message: Actually yes the 31's will fit, I have them on my 98 dak sport. I have the 15 x 8 rims and running the toyo open country a/t. I have no suspension lifts or body lifts on my truck. The tires will rub just a little at full lock though.

Message: What do you mean at full-lock?? I was told that yes, the 31's will fit, however the computer may be affected as far as overdrive etc... are concerned. I am concerned that this will really hamper the fuel economy on the truck

you could buy a Superchips tuner and correct that if you want.

Message: If ck98daksport would kindly give his exact tire size, Leni could do some more research on it.

Message: Leni......full lock just means when you turn the steering wheel fully to the right or left.
The slight rubbing you may get is from the tires edge making contact with the inside of the fender( the black plastic ...some guys just cut away the offending plastic piece).
The amount of rubbing you get from 31x10.5 tires will vary a bit from brand to brand and style to style because 31" can mean anywhere from 30.45" to 31.3" and 10.5" from 10.1" to 10.7" from what I've seen.
You could try a 30 x 9.5 tire and get a bigger than stock tire that will not rub (most likely).
Your dealer can adjust you speedometer to the new tires for you at your next service.
Mine did it for $20.00 CDN while in for an oil change.
The transmission/computer won't care what size tire you have but a bigger tire effectively lowers your gear ratio and thus giving you less torque (pulling power).,
You will however lower your engine speed 100 to 200 rpm at highway cruising speeds and thus get better mileage .
The added weight of the bigger tire (and more expensive tire) and lower effective gearing may worsen your city MPG rating though.
Also the heavier tire adds to the unsprung weight at each corner which will affect handling and add extra strain on the brakes. Whether it's enough for you notice/care about depends on your perception and driving style.
