Subject: 2005 Dakota radio problems in the rain IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota. I've owned it for 4 months now (bought in March of '06) and have put 12k miles on it so far (damn 52 mile commute to work!). Anyway, on two occasions I've had the following problem: If it rains hard for a day or more AND I don't drive the truck then my radio doesn't work properly. The radio turns on for 10 seconds or so and then a loud 'burp' or 'bubble' comes out of the speakers and the radio shuts off... although it doesn't realy shut off, it just stops sending a signal to the speakers. I know this because I have to turn off the radio to try and turn it on again. On both occasions I tried this off/on cycle many times to no availe. The weird part is if it rains and I drive the truck then I don't have this problem. No, there are no obvious signs of any water getting into the truck and I know if I take it to the dealer they are going to tell me that they can't replicate the problem so they can't diagnose it. I've hosed down the truck for ten minutes trying to get the radio to go whack-o... but I can't make it do it. Anyone have this problem or have any ideas???

Message: I have not seen this before but could be that driving the vehicle generates heat to remove any condensation or gives the water an escape path. If you don't drive, the condensation/water builds up and affects the radio. I'd take it to a dealer every time it happens and make sure to get a copy of the write up. Don't attempt to fix it, leave the radio on with no sound coming from the speakers and show it to the service department. This way you can get it on written record. This may lead to worse issues down the road especially if it's wiring related as most wires are ran in bundles and not individually. And if they never find anything with the radio you can use that as leverage to not pay for any related issues.
I'd start with the speaker wiring around doors. And check under dash/under hood for any signs of water damage. You may want to have someone spray water on it with a hose while you peek around. Also check the antenna and mount.
does it sound similar to you powering on pc speakers and plugging them into the sound card?

Message: Yes, it sounds similiar to plugging in (or unplugging) speakers. It does the loud pop and then no sound.
I didn't think about getting it documented in case other problems arise... Good idea! The next time it does it I'll take it to the dealer.
Thanks.
