Subject: Brake & 4WD Part Indicator on??
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok, so as I'm leaving to go on a trip Saturday morning, and about a mile from my house, both my Brake Light and the 4WD Part indicators on my dash light up. I immediatly check my emergency brake, but that was not on. Now, keep in mind that this is a 2wd truck, and have never seen the 4WD Part indicator come on except at startup. Checking the FSM, this is what it has to say about the Brake indicator:

"The red warning light alerts the driver if a pressure differential exists between the front and rear hydraulic systems. The light also alerts the driver when the parking brakes are appl.ied"

Now, I did continue on my trip (3.5 hours each way), and had no issues with braking, or felt like the emergency brake was on. I have yet to find anything in the FSM about the 4WD Part light, not even sure where to look for that in the Manual. Anyway, so what is this about the hydraulic pressure? I checked my brake fluid, and it's up to full, so there's plenty of fluid there, and must be enough fluid to the brakes since I had not felt any different in how it braked. ABS light is NOT on either.

Other thing that has happen, which is odd, is that awhile into my trip, I noticed that my turn signals/hazards weren't working. So I pulled into the next rest stop to check fuses, etc. The fuse under the dash was fine, but there is one for hazards in the engine fuse box as well, and that one DID blow. So I replaced it, checked my signals, and they worked. Got back on the road, and not 2 miles later, the fuse blew again. I'm assuming these items are related as I've never had a problem with this fuse blowing before. Thoughts/suggestions?

I had the ABS and brake lights coming on for a while like that. It seems to have cured itself (at least for now), but one of the things I'm going to look at next if it pops up again is the 'clockspring' behind the steering wheel, which I'm told is the ring that makes/keeps electrical contacts when the steering wheel is turned. From the searching I;ve done, it appears if erratice things happen (warning lights coming on, cruise not working, turn sig's not working, etc.). Not sure if this would be it, but it's something to think about or maybe look at (don't know if there's a way to check them).

Serious short time. That's what we said shortly before leaving the Army.
In your case, something is seriously wrong.
You didn't need to be told that, but I wanted to remind you.

Be sure to let us know what it was.

Ok, maybe this helps or maybe it doesn't. I too had the odd ABS and brake light anomally happen to me on my 97 CC 3.9V6. As stated, no problems braking or anything else that would trigger an "oh thats it" reaction. This happened twice in the past and the lights would go off after a few days/weeks of being on.
Last month while servicing my front brakes I noticed some fluid around the driver side drum. I went into the drum and found that the brake drum bar spring was broken and had allowed the bar to slip into an awkward angle keeping the brake shoes disstended causing some serious wear. The passenger side was fine but I did a complete overhaul of the rear braking system for about ~$65 (wheel cylinders, shoes, spring kit, etc). The lights have yet to come back on so I don't know if this was the problem or not.

Side note, carry the spring to Advance Auto, the ONLY parts house with picture references, and get them to match the spring for you. I went on a three day snipe hunt with O'Reillys before stopping at Advance.

Food For Thought...
