I replaced my worn out belt yestarday. The install was preaty basic. It took about 20 minutes to complete. Anyway when I first started the truck it squeeled for about 30 seconds. I thought fine ok just getting it self alligned. The squeeling still occurs sometimes when I start the truck. It will only squeel for about 5 seconds or so then goes away. My question is: Is this normal for a new belt? I was thinking that the new belt just needs to be broken in. Or is there anything I could have done wrong? Im sure the belt is routed the correct way so it cant be that. Anyway any input would be greatly appericated.

you may want to check the idler and tensioner. you could have a bearing going bad in either.

Look very carefully at the routing of the belt compared to the diagram on the radiator support. It is very easy to misroute the belt and it will cause the belt to squeel etc. It will also cause the engine to overheat. It may sound impossible, but it is actually possible to install this belt so that the water pump turns backwards - thus no cooling!

take the belt back off and give the pulleys on the tensioner and idler a little spin. if they feel a little rough or wobble any they're bad.

or the spring in the tensioner is weak.

you should also check pulley alignment.

another thought is if your battery is geting old/weak it will put a little extra load on the alt. when you first start it and make the belt squeak for a moment.

may be as simple as you didn't have it tight enough.
