Subject: Hood Cable - No Tension IP: Logged
Message: I have an older Dakota, a 89 to be exact. My hood will not close fully and the pull latch that reads "HOOD" will not go back and retract to it original position. It use to pull firmly when in position before un-latching the hood and now the hood will not shut fully and the latch itself is limp. Any ideas for a quick fix? Seems like there is no tension on the pull lever. Gonna look to see if its still even entact. Any ideas will help. Thanks.

Message: sounds to me like the under hood catch is sticking. soak it down with some penitrating lube and move it back and forth until it free plays. spray it down with some graphite lube to keep it goin after.

Message: Nope, it's a classic sign of a broken hood latch spring. It mounts in the bracket at the hood latch. I could not find an exact match at Autozone or Pep Boys, so I bought a generic spring and cut it to length. Dealer would be a better choice, or junkyard.

Message: you guys, either/or seems like a good place to start. Its so minor but still I can't drive the damn thing with it being broken. Thanks for the advice. I'll be looking further into it probably this weekend, when I don't have to do the normal work and dinner routine. Again thanks.

Message: I guarantee you the spring is broken. It may be hanging there, or may have fallen out. They get brittle with age and road salt.

Message: Turns out it was basically both of you ideas. The mechanisms were still there ( spring and all ) but the spring was particularly dead and the bolts rusted. Ended up replacing the complete package. $22 round trip from the dealers.
Thanks for the tip!
