 Subject: blower motor

Truck is a '98 dak with a 3.9. Yesterday the blower motor just up & quit. It wasen't making any noise & was working fine. Fuse is ok, but when I reinsert the fuse I can hear a clicking from under the hood. Is that the relay & is there anything else I should check before pulling the motor? Thanx for your help. I need to get this fixed as we're in for a heat wave this weekend- temps in the 90's.

I'm not going out to look, but you have fuseboxes under the dash and main box behind the battery. I just replaced one that LOOKED fine, so switch fuses to be sure.

I have a 96' sport, my blower motor quit one day, had it in for repairs, mechanic told me it was the motor resistor that went bad. Not sure where that's located

It's kinda weird what happened. I was pulling into my driveway when the blower quit. Then the engine stalled. I had a hell of a time getting it started & when it did the check engine lite stayed on. I shut it down & it started right back up, & the check engine lite cleared. The truck has been running fine ever since. Coincidence? I changed the fuse in the dash, but still no blower motor.

I just called a repair shop {not a dealer} & they told me that in order to replace the motor the dash has to be removed. Does anyone know if this is correct? Also, does anyone know where the resistor under the dash is located? Thanx.

Passenger side firewall. It probably shorted out, and caused a voltage spike in the system that screwed with your PCM. As for the blower motor and the dash, yes, it is true, you have to removed the dash to get to the blower/condensor assembly.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Just got back from repair shop. Got handed a repair estimate for $895.00! Here it is, r&r blower motor & resistor-$432, blower motor- $102, blower motor resistor - $25, idle air control motor- $177, evac. & recharge a.c.- $78. Hey, I know mechanics need to make a living like everybody else, but this is ridiculous. Oh, by the way I told the guy how the truck stalled, so he pulled a code for the idle air control, says it should be replaced & that may be reason blower motor failed. I just looked at him. Truck runs fine. What do you guys think of this whole deal? Guess I'll be driving with the windows down for the time being. Thanx for your advice.

What a load of crap. They're fishing. What a bunch of unrelated parts they want to replace.
I would go to a dealership parts dept and get a new blower motor resistor. While you're there, ask a tech in the service dept where the blower resistor lives in your particular vehicle. Better yet, ask them (nicely) if they would show you. Then go home and replace it and see if that fixes things.
If not, go to a different repair shop (one that knows their way around a vehicle), and get another estimate.
And spend some time reading those links that Josh gave. Could be yours is in the same place.

My blower motor didn't exactly quit on me but it did stop working because a little vacuum line behind the left side of the brake booster that broke off and caused the blower to stay in the low position. I could turn on the a/c and it would blow cold and the heater worked but the blower wouldn't change. I went to my local part store and bought a 6 in. long piece of skinny rubber hose and fixed it for $2.00 Check and see if thats it

Well, I figure it's either the resistor or the motor. Not both. I knew he was giving me a line of s**t when he mentioned the idle air control motor. I figure he pulled an old code, so he wants to grab me for the part. I called another shop & they say they can replace the motor for around $400, parts & labor. I didn't mention the other estimate. By the way, this shop is a Goodyear affiliate that I have a credit card with & I'm going to raise hell if it ain't the blower. I'll let you guys know what the outcome is, but either way I'm ain't spendin $900 for this.

I've now been told that the resistor is under the windshield wiper cowling on the left side. This after being told by 2 different dodge dealers that it's under the dash. The wipers have to be removed to get the cowling off. How do u remove the wipers? Do they pry up or is there another way? Thanx.

If i remember correctly, the wiper shafts are grooved and have a sort of "key way" that runs around the shaft, there is a tab under the blade at the base which has to be moved so that the blade assembly can be lifted straight up the shaft, then you simply just pry up with a pry bar tryng to keep it even as you go, I personally couldn't get my cowling off my truck and I don't think that's how the mechanic got to mine. Good Luck....

I found that the wipers are held down by 2 15mm nuts. Got the cowling off, what a waste of time. There ain't no resistor under it. So I'm back to square one.

Have you done this yet?
"Look at the blower housing on the passenger side under the dash. You'll recognize the blower motor area right away. Go inboard just a bit and you'll see a connector going up into the plastic housing. That connector....is for the resistor board."

I went to a dodge dealership today & had a mechanic show me where this damn thing is located. It's not in the blower housing. No, that would be too easy. It's under the dash alright...beneath the dash windshield area on passenger side, which means the dash has to come out or at least moved out of the way to access the resistor. Nice going dodge. I don't have the time to do it, or the patience. So now I have to shell out labor rate to replace a $15 part. Unbelievable.
