Message: I have the Raybestos ceramic pads and new rotors on my 01 QC, and was told that they were good to use. They squeal so much when braking slowly ever since I have installed them on the truck. I have adjusted the rear drums and they still squeal. I plan on changing them out very soon.

Message: I've been using Raybestos Quiet Stop ceramics and Raybestos PG Rotors. No squeal. Quiet as a mouse. Have had them on for about 8 or 9 months and are still holding up like new. Only downside to these that I've noticed is mine are making a lot of brake dust for supposively "low-dust" pads.

Message: I've been running the Raybestos Quiet Stop's for about a year now. I replaced the originals after they started squeeling. The origs still had plenty of life left, I've just had no luck with quieting the "squeelers" once they've started.
After about 3 months with the QS's, I noticed the brake pulsing that feels a bit like warped rotors, but it would only do it after it warmed up, and the stop was from highway speeds.
After a bit of research, I started thinking that my problem might be more related to using ceramic pads on a rotor that was bedded with semi-metalic pads.
I replaced the rotors with Wagners, and kept the same QS pads. It's been fine that way for the last 4 months.
As far a brake feel, still the same, as far as dirty rims, a bit better, but not that much better.

Message: Sounds like "Raybestos" ceramic pads are a
problem... I got my no major name brand ceramic
pads plus new rotors from Advance Auto Parts
two years ago and have been very pleased with
the results. No more warped rotors and no
squeeling.

Message: Not really.. more like poor quality rotors are the problem. Ceramic pads don't "give" like semi-metallics do and can wear out your rotors if they aren't decent quality (ie: not $20 Napa specials) or "built for ceramics". Just wish there wasn't so much dust caked on my rims. Like Lurkin said though, it is better than the dust the semi-metallic pads ground off. Anyone have any experience with Hawk pads? I've heard they're good and pretty much dust-free.

Message: Oh, Shatto, I've also heard that you shouldn't use ceramics if you are going to be towing frequently. I think it has to do with all the braking involved and how it heats up the rotors? I'm not sure, but that is what a few people have told me over the years. Wish I could clarify that better for you though.

Message: Ceramic pads work just about the same as the older stock semi-metallic pads. No performance improvement. The only advantage is in noise. Pads squeal because they vibrate. Properly installed ceramic pads also squeal, but at such a high frequency you can't hear it. Repair shops push the ceramics because they don't want you coming back complaining about noise.
Also, most pad makers do not recommend them for towing/hauling. Don't know why.
Finally, if you want to improve performance, step uo to something like Performance Friction brand carbon fiber pads.

Message: I've just turned over 100K, miles that is, with the same brakes all the way around on my 01 QC.
Pads, rotors, etc.
The ORIGINAL pair. It's the auto tranny that wears your front brakes so quick.
When you're done laughing I'll explain my statement.
OK, Well then, auto don't downshift some like a properly driven manual tranny will.
Then there's the parking brake issue. HOw many of you auto drivers, or manual for that matter USE the parking brake EVERY time you park your truck? Did you know it atuomatically adjusts the rear drums (mine are 11 inch) every time you apply and release it?
Both of these things put much less work on the front brakes.
01, QC, 4.7(exceeds output of HO), 5 speed manual, trailer towing, tire and handling, etc.

Message: Thank y'all.
I did switch to Raybestos, but have not used ceramic. Getting near. Might.
I put new factory rotors on and my mechanic said they needed to be turned. Sure enough, the factory pumps them out so fast, they aren't true. Ditto for the factory heads, which needed planing and needed the valve seats re-cut. Thank goodness for good engine builders.
Perhaps the vibrating some of you are having is because of not turning new discs. By the way, that is the only time I face them. Takes only a few miles for new pads to set and braking is as it was.
