Subject: HELP: ABS and BRAKE warning lights on!!? IP: Logged
Message: I read the post a little ways down about the ABS/BRAKE dummy lights on and the speedo not responding. My ABS/BRAKE lights just started coming on last night, but my speedo works fine. Could this be the speedo sensor mentioned in the other post too? Or should I look for something else? Could it simply be the brake pads (rear shoes were getting down there last time I checked, ~6 months ago)? The lights come on while I'm driving and not using the brakes. Thanks in advance!! Oh, I have an '02 quad cab, AWD/4WD, 4.7, disks(f) & drums(r).

Message: there is a box that is under the bed before the gas tank on the driver side. if one of those hoses is disconnected than that will trigger the lights to come on. if those hoses are fine than check the brakes out.

Message: With the speedo not working, it is most likely the rear wheel speed sensor. Located on the top of the rear differential. $40-$50 for the part, and easy as heck to install.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Message: Excellent call, toolman! Well, at least it would appear - I need to drive around for a while to be sure, but the the bottom hose had worked it's way very loose. Not all the way off, but nearly so. This would probably explain the behavior of the light coming on too - seemingly randomly, sometimes right away, sometimes after driving around for a while, sometimes not come on at all.
Thanks for contributing too, cuz!

Message: Well, I guess I spoke (wrote) too soon. A quick trip to MacDonald's and it showed up again. It's acting a little more consitant now - comes on after about 1/2 mile or maybe a minute or so of driving. Sooo.....
1) Will worn brake shoes (or pads, for that matter) cause the ABS & BRAKE lights to come on?
2) If it's not the brake pads/shoes, am I looking to replace 1 or 2 sensors?
I see some wires and a rubber covered connector (I assume) with a metal 'cage/shield/ around it on the forward top of the differential. Is this the wheel speed sensor? My speedo still works properly. If there's another sensor, where would it be located, and what is it?
Thanks again!!

Message: Also wondering if there is a wheel pickup sensor that I need to be looking at (per the earlier thread)?
My speedo still works, even after the lights come on, and works at all speeds (under 35~40 too).
Help anyone? Please?

Message: I realize technology changes over the years, but for my 95' I had the lights with no obvious problem with the brakes (they were working fine). I looked in the shop manual and it stated to disconnect the battery and that doing so would reset the system. It did. That was almost a year ago. Like I said, yours being newer it may be different. Anybody have a shop manual covering his year to look in?
Hope this helps.

Message: I will try disconnecting the battery, then re-connecting again. I also bought a wheel speed sensor for above the diff today (last one in stock, $43, and someone else all ready called about it so I took off of work early).
There are no codes displayed, at least by doing the key on/off 3 times (just flashes 'pdone'). Would an OBDIII reader read codes while I'm driving, or if the car's on? Here's one for you guys - can I read the codes using one of those superchips(?) programmer things (might be able to talk the wife into one in that case).
Here's what I've surmised so far:
- I can drive all day without the ABS/BRAKE lights going on if I don't go over 30-35 mph
- If I go over 35-40 mph, they will come on shortly (~30 seconds) afterwards
- Brake lights work fine
- Speedo works fine at all speeds
- Cruise control does NOT work ('cruise' light on dash will come on, but it will not engage)
I'll try the battery disconnect thing first, then try replacng the WSS, and will post back with results.

Message: OK. Disconnected the battery for ~5 minutes, then reconnected and went for a drive. Lights came on. Replaced the WSS above the differential with a new one I bought today. Went for a drive - ABS & BRAKE lights came on.
Any other suggestions? It appears I only have the standard (rear) ABS becasue I can't find any sensors or wires coming off the front hubs.
Will an OBDIII reader read a code while the dummy lights are on? Or would I be wasting my money buying one?
I guess I'm on to checking some switch above the brake pedal, then maybe try bleeding the brakes.
I guess I was half expecting this result because the speedo still worked under 40mph. Does anyone have any ideas why the cruise control wouldn't work? And what this might have to do with the ABS/BRAKE lights?

Message: adam - if your speedo does not work, from the other posts I've been reading, I'd bet it's the wheel speed sensor (WSS) which is located on the top of the rear differential. I just paid $42.90 for a new one from my Dodge dealer. I really, really wish my problem was that simple.

Message: Well, I topped off the brake fluid reservior, swapped fuzes with the interior light fuse, and disconnected the battery again for a good 10~15 minutes. Lights still coming on.
Somebody? ... Anybody? ... Please?
Is there any way to get some sort of diagnostic code with these lights coming on??

Message: mtnman82, yes it is a possibility that the ABS light will come on if the rear brakes are getting thin due to the pressure diff, but before you drop more money into it, go to you local auto parts store (auto zone and advance auto to name a few) and use their scan tool. All you need is your driver's license, and they will let you borrow the tool as long as it doesn't leave the parking lot.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Message: What is the 'clock spring'?? And might that cause the cruise control to not work also?
I actually called Kragen this morning about renting a scanner (took the morning off of work to troubleshoot - supposed to take the boy camping next week). Kragen's tool is out for up to 5 days. Autozone said they would 'rent' me one if I bought it and then returned it for a full refund. So I staerted cruising down to Autozone, and guess what? I couldn't get the lights to come on! I drove around for another 1/2 hour and couldn't get them to come on again. Did a few hard/fast stops from speed amnd could feel the ABS working. Cruise control works fine now. So, I drove around the rest of the day and not a peep from the ABS/BRAKE lights.
I guess I've now entered the twilight zone (cue music ...). Is there a way to check the clock spring? I was also thinking maybe I had a vacuum leak (don't the ABS and cruise systems operate off the vacuum tank?)? I have a feeling the lights won't come on again until next week, when I'm driving around up in the mountains. I'm also going to check the rear brake shoes again.
I'll post again when I have more info. Please feel free to offer up any more advice, and thanks again!!

Message: I to have an 02 QC AWD/Auto 4.7. My clock spring has also gone out twice. The clock spring is basically a wiring harness in the steering wheel that allows the steering wheel electrical components to work as the steering wheel turns.
On mine, the symptoms when it goes out are:
o ABS and/or check engine light comes on
o warning chime sounds
o no cruise
o no horn
o NOTE - NO codes are set when this happens
o NOTE - cruise and horn all work at any other time

Message: Hmmm, wondering about the clockspring too now. Lurkin, the BRAKE light does NOT come on when you have had your clockspring go out? I'll try the horn too if/when it happens again.
Going on day 3 now of driving around wiht no problems. I even took her off-road yesterday evening, and got bouncing around pretty good in a couple spots. Everything seems rock solid. Another thing that's kind of wierd is that the brakes seem better than they ever have since I've owned it (got it used in '04). I even took it into the shop twice because of some wierd things the brakes were doing (shop replaced the master cylinder under warranty one of the times), but they still never felt right. ABS wasn't working quite right to me - it was more of a 'feel' thing that I could never get the mechanics to 'feel', the couple guys who drove it said it felt fine to them. ABS works as I would expect it to now. Very strange .....
