Subject: Loud Gear Whine From Rear End... IP: Logged
Message: Just this past week I started to get a loud gear whine from the rear end. I checked for leaks under the truck, nothing. Checked the fluid level in the rear diff and it's good. I'm going to take off the cover of the rear diff and see if I've broken a tooth later on today. Question is, does this sound consistent with a broken gear or would you recomend checking something else? Doesn't sound like a wheel bearing because it doesn't change the pitch of the sound when I turn.
If it is a gear inside my diff how hard is it to replace (with lsd)?
Thanks!

Message: Sounds like a carrier bearing. Time for a rebuild.

Message: Mine lasted a few hundred thousand miles, then the noise got so loud people were looking....thru closed windows....at freeway speeds.
A limited-slip cost less than the vanilla stock.
Now all I have to worry about is if someone spits out the window or it rains.

Message: My 03 RT started doing the same thing but it was more noticed when backing up and turning .... i did a full fluid change with the additive ..... the noise stoped ....

Message: so, i just got under there and drained the fluid and all i could find was the tiniest of chips on the very edge of the pinion gear. now, i forgot to pickup a magnet on my way home so i couldn't go searching around to see what i could pick up. assuming this is all i find, would that be enough to cause that noise? seems not...how much of a pain is it to rebuild this bitch? i've got only hand tools and a decent mechanical knowledge but have never tackled something like this. should i maybe clean it out real good, add new fluid and drive it around first to see if the noise goes away?
thanks for the help guys...
jc
i should also note that this baby's got 107k miles on her with no major problems other than a leaky rack n pinion that was replaced twice. she's been good to me, just gettin' old.

Message: Maybe try new fluid and limited slip additive first ? GraphiteDak did his own, and usually has an excellent write up of stuff he's done linked to his signature on posts. I had mine done by a specialist mechanic freinds had recomended; this involves some precision assembly for good results and long term reliability.

Message: If you are just going to change the bearings and reuse the old gears etc you can get away with just having the bearings pushed off and on and as long as all the shims go back where they came off then all will be well. If the shims get mixed up or you decide to change gears, then the pinion depth and ring gear back lash needs to be set - in that case you better get someone with the knowledge and gauges to properly set it up.

Message: Ok, turns out the chip was a bit bigger than I initially thought but it was about half the size of a pinky fingernail. At first it just looked like the tooth was broken on the leading edge but the fingernail size chip is on the contact edge of the tooth. I couldn't find the chip after checking the drained oil and searching around there with a magnet but I did find a LOT of metal fragments collected on the dif magnet. I figure the broken piece may have been ground up since this seemed to me a little excessive for metal fragments. I'm going to drive it around a bit and then drain it again in a week or two.
Now, I just test drove it and the whine is still there but not as loud as before. Is this whine going to be there until I replace my pinion gear? Or could this mean that there's something else outta whack?
Thanks!
