Subject: How can you tell you have a bad cat?

Guy's: What are the symptoms of a bad catalytic converter. Have had a bad smell coming from outside the vehicle and originally thought my brake calipers were sticking. Any help is appreciated.

AAMCO? Muffler shop? Can't pass smog?

The only symptom I know of is rotten egg smell.

I guess the computer is the main way to tell.

Will the cat have that smell if it's bad all the time? Or can it still go bad with no smell?

Not all cats have the rotten egg smell when they go bad. There is a way to tell with a vacuum gauge, but I forget the exact procedure.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Found where I posted it 3 years ago - vacuum should be about 17-22 at idle; should be 3-5 inches higher at 2500-3000 rpm - if same or lower, most likely due to clogged cat.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Seems that most rattle when shot but not wrote in stone. Loss of power is the biggy to me. Mine went at the snap of a finger and wouldn;t rev past 2000. Could hardly pull itself. Not all are this bad but you get the idea. Just for kicks, I got the free replacement at the dealer. Didn't feel right so i took up my test hill. It's about 5 miles to the top at 8% grade. I could only get it to 75 or 76 mph so I took it to our local muffler shop and he removed it. we could see nothing wrong with it but I had him install one of his anyway. 145 bucks installed. Not to shabby. Anyway same hill less then half way up I'm bouncing off 100 and pulling strong yet. I called that good and backed off. My opinion. The dealer cats are junk period. I still got the new dealer one on the shelf in the shop. Thought it most likely would be good on a 4 or 6 banger but not a V8.

So many problems .... So little time

If it beats up your dog, sprays on your bed, and craps in the corner, then you've got a bad cat.

I would rather not say who this is but depending on where you live.. (state) Whether they check emissions every year or whatever. I live out in Michigan and they never check for emissions, So I removed the cat. Yes, I agree not very enviormental friendly but if you want more power removing that will definetly help. I will say I still run a muffler, gotta stay somewhat legal eh?

When both of my cats went bad there was no sulfer
smell from them... only the rattle that would never go
away... driving down the road in lower rpms, all I could
here was... clink....burp....clink...clink....clink! Srry, it was
very noticable when mine went bad... so careful you
don't replace parts not needing it! The odd thing is that
before my cat was bad I was getting 17...18.. mpg....
With it off Im getting 20...21...mpg.... and I haven't been
driving any differrent... oh 3.9 v6! for the mileage

YES! YOU CAN CLEAN YOUR CAT!!
This method works pretty good:

1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids.
You may need to stand on the lid.

4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds.
Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power-wash and rinse".

6. Have someone open the front door of your home.
Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.

8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

Sincerely,

The Dog

You know, that cat cleaning procedure may actually work. Wish I had a cat.

And if I had a bad cat, I would surely use the "clean it" steps.

Speaking of catalytic converters, I had one delivered today.
You guys ever looked into a new cat?
Looks really cool. It is strange how the light looks much smaller and far away.
I wonder if the smart lady in Parade magazine could explain it.
