Message: I suspect I found out why my rotors warped after 30K miles. Went to change my rotors and pads on my 02CC V6 4X4 and found I needed to use a breaker bar to loosen every lug nut on the front wheels. Could hardley loosen them even with a pipe attached to the lug wrench. The dealership did me this favor when they changed out my upper ball joints from the recall. The moral is I will always check the lug nuts immediately when I get work done requiring the front wheels to be removed.

Message: typical, people just use the impact to tighten down the lug nuts. i think they need to be torqued to 80fts maybe more for your rim.

Message: Same thing happened when I had the ball joints on my truck replaced with the recall. I went to rotate my tires and it took a 4' cheater bar to break the lugs loose-only on the front wheels. I was so frick'n P.O'ed that afterwards I went up to the dealership where I've bought three vehicles. I found the service writer that has always handled my service work orders and gave him a huge and loud piece of my mind. What the heck would I have done if I was out on the road and had a front flat tire. I would have never been able to get the lugs off. I told him very clearly that he would NEVER see my truck or my wife's Durango in their 5 Star shop again. Now I drive 30 miles to another smaller dealership where the mechanics don't change every three months.

Message: I think the stealership knew what they were doing. They told me that I needed my rotors and pads changed. After 25K miles and no pulsation I thought they were crazy. I think they purposely overtightened the lugs thinking I'd go back to them for a rotor change. Took another 5K miles for the rotors to warp but I wouldn't let he dealer touch it. I agree that if I got a flat on the road I would have been hosed trying to take off the lugs without a breaker bar. If the dealer really did overtighten puposely it definately is unethical. I wont be back to Freehold Dodge!

Message: I hate pretty much any huge and corporate company out there now.
I have had nothing but problems when the time comes with all
automotive dealers, Dodge or not, and even co.'s like Cingular and
Comcast cannot even walk and breathe at the same time it seems.
America was founded on the independent market, and is now
controlled by the big guys... And they suck at every minute of it.

Message: Found and corrected the same problem immediately after my ball joints were recalled. Torque spec for gen 3 is 85 - 115; I set mine at 100. This lack of care seems typical of what we can expect from "5 star" dealers...

Message: Not to mention the fact that whey want an arm and a leg for work they do. When my tranny went out in my durango, they wanted $4,600 to rebuild it, including $800 just to take it out. Got it done at Aamco for $1950. About the only thing they're good for is warranty work and screwing the customer the best they can. there are a lot of small independant repair shops that can do a better job and cheaper than the stealerships. The small shop's existance depends on repeat customers so they are more likely to be honest and giving you your money's worth of service.

I hate to be the doom and gloom guy, but for those of us with rear disks, re-torque those, too if any shop has taken the rear wheels off.

Message: Good idea to have the right torque on all 4 wheels, wether you have rear disc or not. Its nice to be able to change the tire if you get a flat too.

Message: My opinion is give them the factory lug wrench and tell them to use it. The factory thinks this is sufficant for you to use so it should be good enough for them.

Message: Ok, listen to this: Getting my brand new Procomp black steel rims installed right after my body lift...got it done at 4Wheel Parts in Salt Lake City. My rotors were warped to sh*t on my way home so I checked the tourque on them and my tourque wrench only went up to 125 pounds. So I grab my buddies tourque wrench...225 POUNDS!!!!!!!!! I called them up, first asked them if they spec the nuts or if they use tourque sticks. The guy said they just air down the gun and throw them on. I told them my rotors were now warped because of how much they tourqued them down and he said "In 12 years of being a mechanic I've never hear of that??" I nearly sh*t myself...never going there AGAIN!!

Message: I had my BJ's done ~99,000miles on my 01, 2wd, QC.
About a week later I had my ties done, I have the lifetime bal. and rotate.
I use Discount Tire also, I had them rotate and balance my tires, as I do about 7,000miles, and they didn't mention the front lugs being overtorqued. Maybe they just didn't mention it.
But they DO hand torque the lugs.
I took our Mazda to a rip off Meineke muffler, to maybe have the front brakes done. They pulled all the tires, pulled off the dust caps on the rear drums, wiped some fresh brake fluid on the inside of the cap, and then tried to tell me the calipers were leaking on the rear drums.
I told them to put it back together, I wasn't going to let them work on it. they DIDN'T Torque the lugs, saying they just turn down the torque wrench. What A-holes. Sorry for the rant.

Isn't it great when you know enough to know you are being sold a bill of goods?

Message: Shatto I've had that experience with Midas and Meineke. Went there on 2 different occasions to get their advertised brake shoe specials and each time they said I needed wheel cylinders and Midas even said I needed a master cylinder. They advertise $20 brake shoe specials just to get people in and sell them on expensive unnecessary work. Took my car elsewhere for brake shoes and will never visit those 2 establishments again.

Message: Had a 01 Dakota...At 11K miles my problems started. Front end started to shake when brakes applied + rear axle noises & drive train vibration. Dealership bent over backwards to correct problems...Replaced rotors, pads, calipers and anything else they could think of. Each time the same thing, problem solved for about 5K miles. Dealership even sent it out to an independent shop. Chrysler tech reps were useless and came up with the most stupid "causes".
Finally started to sue them as a lemon, after 2 years they finally settled.
Dealership ofered me a great deal on an 03 Quad Cab. At 40K I turned rotors, 10K later I need to do it again.
Now I have a new problem that I hope someone can answer. Both my brake warning lights come on at random. Sometimes they come on for a week at a time. Sometimes they don't come on at all. Sometimes I start with no warnings and 20 miles or so they come on. Brake fluid is fine, I can feel the ABS and there is no problem with braking. Anybody know where and how to check sensors. I would like to avoid the dealership if at all possible.

Message: The best thing to do if the dealership over-torques your lugs is to go back. Find the service manager, drag him outside to your vehicle and hand him the lug wrench they include with the vehicle for roadside tire changes. As he struggles explain that you were planning to drive cross-coutnry in a few days, and if you got a flat in the middle of no where, you would have beeen screwed. Make him keep trying till they refund your money.

Message: I hate taking my dak anyplace that has to take the wheels off, even Discount tire. the Discount tires around me use the impact to tighten lugs. I saw them do it to my truck and went out and yelled at the kid and they tried to tell me that the impact they were using had a torque setting on it. I said let me see it. I was told it is preset at the factory. I just laughed and told them to loosen everything and use a real torque wrench. I know that a good impact has settings kinda like that but I really don't think that Discount is dishing out cash like. But who knows.

Message: Well, I'm glad to see that most of you have good experiences at Discount Tire. My brother is an assistant manager and has worked at many of the stores here in Minnesota. Up here, they are required to use the torque wrench, no if's and's or but's about it. They have the torque sticks for the guns, but they are required to check the torque manually.
Torque sticks work, and are much faster than doing it by hand, but there's alot to be said about how it makes you feel when you can see the job done right.
Brake rotors at least are fairly cheap...at least on the front for us do it yourselfers.
