Subject: rancid smell from AC
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys/gals,

I have an '01 Cab PLus SLT and we've been using the AC fairly often to combat this hot weather, and recently the AC has been smelling really rancid and has a strong chemical smell. It's such a weird smell that we've been refraining from using the AC since we don't know what we could be breathing in.

Any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

depending on the humidity. mold can form inside the ducting if it remains moist. It's a good idea before parking your car to turn off the air and let the fan run for awhile before shutting it off. that will help force the moisture out of the ducts.

Besides what jerry told you, check to make sure
your drain is not plugged. Check that your carpet
in not wet. That *could* be the smell.

thanks guys. I'll have a look. I'm not exactly sure where the drain is at, but i read someone else having an issue with the AC leaking or something? I hope that's not the issue here. Anyways, thanks for the help.

Miguel,

Drain is on passenger side firewall about arms reach down and kinda out of sight. Its located in the firewall and IF your lucky, you'll be able to see it just barely protruding out through the firewall. Theres been a "leak" issue there where the water leaks inside the firewall into your floorboards or is blown back in around the outer edge of that drain. Dodge parts department sells a small black rubber 90* boot to go over that to prevent the blowback.

I have a "stink" issue also but I am not driving or using my AC much when I am driving and I am in Florida. Been enjoying the breeze with the windows down when I do drive it.

I also agree with turing your AC off and running just the fan for a couple minutes before shutting the truck down to rid the system of any moisture that would cause mold.

I notice that if I just shut off the AC after I park it, the next time I use the AC it has a musty smell. If I shut it off as I pull down my street and run the fan until I shut the engine off after parking, the next time I use AC there is no smell. It's only after I've been through Taco Bell that there is a smell; er, non car related smell that is. lol

After you fix the 'water on the passenger side floorboard',

then, once you cool your truck down, take it off max a/c, and run it the rest of the time on regular a/c, and it won't smell anymore.

01, QC, SLT, etc.

The dealership cleaned out my ac for $90. He said there was a ton of crap in my fan and slime all over. Now my ac smells nice and clean and there is no leaves making noise in the fan anymore. I sealed up my firewall drain and removed my carpet to drip dry for a few days. I am a happy camper now.
