Subject: Loud Engine Roaring IP: Logged
Message: Hello all, need some advice here. I just bought a 2004 Dakota 4x4 Awd 4.7l v8 and while driving to Louisiana I noticed a very loud roaring sound coming from the engine. The noise got louder as the RPM's got higher, and so forth. My first thought was that the tranny was overheating since I was towing an empty trailer at the time, I had the overdrive off truck was running at about 3000 rpm for two hours. When I pulled over the temperature guage was in the normal and the tranny fluid did not smell burned when I pulled the dipstick. I simply waiting a few minutes then continued the trip this time with the overdrive ON. The noise did not come back the whole rest of the way there nor did it come back as I towed the trailer fully loaded down, I kept the overdrive on again.
I was thinking it was definately tranny noise of some kind but the other day just when starting the truck cold in the morning it started doing it just driving around in my neighborhood!! Could it be all the electric fans coming on at once or something?
anyone having any thoughts on this would be helpful thank you

Message: The fan clutch is engaging, which makes the fan spin faster than normal. This usually happens when the engine is running a bit warm, and on cold starts as well. If yours is doing it all the time, a new viscous clutch might be in order.
On cold start, my 2004 does it after about a minute of idling (warming it up), and sometimes doesn't loosen up for a couple hundred yards of driving. My Tacoma has never done this, but I had a 1980 RX-7 that did. My wife's Grand Cherokee with the same engine does it, too.

Message: Could it be the clutch fan was kicking on?

Message: I'd bet it's the fan clutch, and not a problem unless it's making that loud noise all the time or not locking up when the truck engine gets hot. I live in the desert and have had the fan clutch engage at 80-85MPH when it's really hot out,,, 120 degrees+ or while towing. Once my fan clutch went bad and the truck started overheating at high speed in those extreme conditions, replaced the fan clutch and problem solved. If it's not doing it anymore and the truck is running cool I wouldn't worry about it.

Message: The default when the fan clutch fails is to lock-up. This only applies if you have a clutch fan.
Since it was used when you bought it, do the old mechanics trick of feeling the back of the radiator, when the engine is at running temperature. When mine was bad, 2/3ds was cold and the temperature gauge read normal. Good idea to have the engine off when you do it.
Why on earth did you have the overdrive off? ?? They call it automatic transmission because it shifts when it needs to. Seriously, the only reason to use the button is if you are at a speed where it is hunting for a gear, or for braking.
By the way this is how to use the overdrive as an engine brake;
Overdrive off.
Set cruise control.
Sit back and relax!
It will hold the speed where it won't with just the OD off.
I had 1200 lbs in my 3.9 automatic going down the 12,or so, mile descent down the Grapevine into LA the other day. Set it at 55, the speed limit and didn't touch it as I navigated billowing clouds of truck brake smoke.

Message: My '94 does the same thing but only when hot. It dose get a bit loud like a fan on a much larger truck.

Message: I get that from my Dak too, mostly when I start out in the morning when the engine is cold until it warms up. But yesterday when it was hot out and I had the AC on after it was way warmed up it was doing it. It drove normal with a normal sound a little later. Understand it when the engine is cold, but has never done it when it was warmed up, but may have had to do with it being 100 degrees out and the AC on full blast.

Message: THANKS for all the replies! :) Sorry I did not get to respond until now I have been traveling. I had hoped it was some kind of fan noise but of course some people thought it was definately the transmission going out. I explained to them that the noise did not stop when the truck was pulled over on the side of the road, meaning there was no load on the tranny anymore and the roaring sound persisted. Because Dodge has a bad reputation for transmission problems in the past that is probebly where they get their biased information. Oh and I only had the OD off because the truck would not hold speed on the highway, lots of rpm racing up and down to hold speed.
I did not know that the fan clutch could make such a loud noise, however I have never owned a Truck before (only Jeep's and SUV's) so I wouldnt know.
Thanks alot all!!
